#AlephAlpha, the German #AI #startup, has announced they are halting work on Large Language Models (#LLM). But is this a clever strategic decision or a missed opportunity? 🤔 As we see major players like OpenAI’s GPT-4, Google’s Gemini Ultra, and Meta’s LLaMA rapidly expanding, LLMs seem to be dominating the AI landscape. These models are trained on massive datasets, using billions of parameters. But here’s the point – building these foundation models requires billions in monetary investment and specialized talent. So, realizing a positive business case has proven difficult. It’s no surprise that only a handful of #tech giants can afford to compete. ➡️ What’s next? My prediction: While a few large players will continue building foundation models, most companies will shift their focus to building applications and services on top of these models, especially in niche markets. ℹ️ Take Aleph Alpha, for example. They're now pivoting to #PhariaAI, an operating system for generative AI (#GenAI). Even OpenAI’s latest model series, OpenAI o1, is designed to solve specialized problems in science, math, and coding. So, what’s your take? OpenAI emphasizes that safeguards have been implemented to prevent misuse. Perspective 2: However, the fact that the AI "unexpectedly" imitated the user's voice raises serious concerns. 🔥 "Give your awesome data work the spotlight and impact it deserves." This was my rallying cry at our recent Munich Datageeks e.V. Meetup, where I had the opportunity of presenting "Attention is (almost) all you need - Storytelling for Datageeks." 🤯 As data professionals, we often find ourselves immersed in algorithms, databases, and complex analyses. But how often do our brilliant ideas go unnoticed?   💡 Over the years, I've experienced that great ideas or content doesn't always speak for itself – sometimes, it needs a little help to unfold its full impact. In my talk, I addressed a key challenge: How can we harness the power of storytelling to amplify our work's impact without becoming Storygeeks or sacrificing precious time for our core data responsibilities? To tackle this, I shared what I’ve seen work best - both in my own experience and for others to make our data projects more compelling without compromising our data-driven focus.   📝 I really enjoyed the plentiful questions and engaging discussions afterwards with our community. "It's like they turn data into art!" Amazing job Elisabeth Gamperl and Julia Kandler and teams for this year's personal SZ review! 👉 www.sz.de/mein-2024 For me, another crazy year with AI has almost passed and, of course, I had to create a special version of my personal SZ review. So I fed mine into Google's NotebookLM and let it create an (English) podcast which I put into a video with one of the sharing cards and auto captions. While this has been super fun, there are also two messages in this which I'd like to share - one for data and one for product people: Data only becomes really useful when you start telling stories. I love how in the podcast they actually interpret the stats of my SZ reading behavior and discuss them. Why was the election bot my favorite article? Why do I read most on Mondays and at nights? What does it tell about me and who am I? “Maybe she was just curious about those bots everyone was taking about.” From time to time, product requires some crazy shots. We want to solve (user) problems and it's absolutely right to focus on that. NotebookLM (and probably also my audio SZ 2024 review) isn't something that people have asked for though and it's unclear (to me) what user problem it solves. Yet it has become so popular, fuels creativity and might inspire real products. Do what you want to and experiment every now and then! #datastorytelling #productinnovation #genai

The first project that gets all my attention focuses on Commercial Excellence in the pharmaceutical industry. As a cancer survivor, this has been both exciting and encouraging for me. 🎀 The innovation being driven by new technology even in its various intricate regulatory restriction, is truly astonishing. The future promises a more integrated healthcare system. I strongly believe in incorporating more holistic approaches into #healthcare. A #DigitalTwin could change how we think about next best actions in a way that makes sense for the industry and is the best for the patient. Bringing conversations like this to the forefront, especially with experts from #Grünenthal, #Pfzier, #Bayer and other pace setters in this industry, is very enlightening. #GenerativeAI, makes me more confident than ever that there is a better way to do things. This is a great step forward in getting to understand those limitations and possibilities. Looking forward to learning more and onboarding great minds!

Are we asking the right questions? Leading virtual teams - distributed, asynchronous, collaborative… what’s most important? For me: 1. Giving and Rising #Trust 2. Triggering #Creativity and #Growth 3. Sharing #Responsibility 4. Ensuring #Productivity 5. Establish #Belonging / #Connection 6. Ensuring #Health and #Growth … those are not “extra” tasks, but the result of emotional leadership, mature use of todays NewWork communication and collaboration and ability to role model digital skills (and digital tools) … once capable of leading like that “in the digital age”, you’re ready to work with #networks and #communities too. The origin/trigger of this has been a LinkedIn Post, asking people to share their experience /together with #AI. I really like those reflections, just in my eyes the topics in the LinkedIn post are not going in the right direction, as they just repeat, what management has always done/asked in the past Well, it’s also a known issue with AI generated /but also human issue: “applying past knowledge to todays/future challenges” What do you think? Due to some lunch talks in the last weeks about books, i thought it could be valuable for you, to share a bit about my book readings from this year. No. 1 "Gamification, Digitization and Industry 4.0" is an interesting book for anyone dealing with the creation of new SaaS products, the future of work and general tech. management. It offers from my opinion valuable insights into the opportunities that arise from the digital transformation and shows how gamification can be used to seize these opportunities. In all of the three dimensions: product development, future of work and management as such. Everything explained on real gamification examples. 𝗬𝗼𝘂 𝗱𝗼𝗻'𝘁 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝗯𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗮-𝗱𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗻! 𝗝𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗮𝘃𝗼𝗶𝗱 𝗯𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗮-𝘀𝘁𝘂𝗽𝗶𝗱. When a company aims for using data more efficiently to support its vision, everybody is speaking of becoming data-driven. Recently other people came up with alternative terms like data-supported, -guided or -inspired (famously coined by fellow Dr. Sebastian Wernicke). But why are smart people from Data suddenly coming up with other phrases? To my experience, this is because a lot of companies (and people) actually became data-stupid, when trying to leverage the potential of Data. But what does data-stupid mean: ❌Using data only for increasing efficiency ❌Stop the data-journey after harvesting the low-hanging fruits 🍎🍐 ❌Investing only in low-risk or no-risk projects While this gives a short-term boost in many relevant KPIs (esp. short-term earnings), it can severely harm the companies long-term performance. De-risking the product portfolio is a great way to hinder innovation and become outdated by the competition. Instead a good data strategy also means: 💡Exploring new data-based products 💡Taking more calculated risks in developing new products and services 💡Spend efficiency savings on strategic projects That way the data journey: ✅Supports the companies long-term success ✅Actively contributes to revenue Did you ever see someone actually become data-stupid? Just automatically generated, flavorless, mindless phrases stitched together to form an amalgam of arbitrariness. 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘀𝗲𝗲: • Zero emotions. • No opinion. • Just a waste of time. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝗮𝗱 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁: 𝗚𝗲𝗻𝗔𝗜 𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗵𝗲𝗹𝗽 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗼𝘄𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀: • Come up with a draft you can edit. • Gather your ideas. • Structure your thoughts. • Correct your mistakes (you'll find plenty here as this post is hand-written) 𝗢𝗿 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗻 𝗴𝗼 𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗱𝗰𝗼𝗿𝗲: • Finetune a model with your body of work • Make it recreate your style   Then edit and adapt to make it truly your content.
