The latest Australian HR Institute (AHRI) Quarterly Work Outlook report highlights a critical ongoing challenge for HR professionals in Australia: the labour market remains tight, even as some key indicators show a slight cooling. With over 600 senior HR professionals and organisational decision-makers contributing to this report, it's clear that expectations for a near-term easing in recruitment and retention pressures may be overly optimistic. This underscores the need for employers to remain vigilant in their strategies to engage, reward, and retain talent in a competitive market. Adding to the pressure, wage expectations for the next 12 months have risen to 3.8%—the highest recorded in any of AHRI’s six surveys to date. This surge reflects the heightened competition for talent and the growing need for HR leaders to balance rising employee pay expectations with organisational goals. New research from Deloitte shows two thirds of workers have experienced at least one sign of burnout, with a similar proportion indicating that poor mental health was the reason they were leaving their job. For individuals, experiencing burnout can be devastating with repercussions on relationships, income, self-esteem and physical wellbeing. For companies, the impact can be felt in workplace productivity, cost and difficulty hiring new people, huge amounts spent in training new staff and then seeing them leave early. Australian Bureau of Statistics / Aus government released a ‘Recruitment Market Insights Report’ for March. What the data is saying⬇️ 🏙️ Capital city recruitment has dropped. In March, Recruitment activity decreased in Capital cities, whilst recruitment activity in ‘rest of state’ areas saw an increase. ⁉️ Australian Employers are still unsure on headcount growth. The proportion of Employers expecting to increase their staff in the next 3 months has decreased by 4 percentage points, to 22% in March. 📈 Staff turnover still the main hiring driver. The main catalyst for recruiting (62%) in March 2024 was purely staff turnover. Whilst only 27% recruited to fill new vacancies and 11% of employers were recruiting to fill both new headcount and positions due to staff turnover. ⌛ Time to fill vacancies still a big challenge for most. The proportion of Employers who were unable to fill their vacancies within a month was 49% in March 2024, but this was a 5% reduction from February. The data suggesting the difficulties to hire stems from many facets. We have been walking our clients through this data + other insights to make sure they are an employer of choice.
