Are you lonely at work? That may sound like a silly question -- how can you be lonely when you're surrounded by or constantly meeting with colleagues? But for many of us, the reality is that in spite of being busier than ever at work, we're also lonely. The 2024 State of the Global Workplace report by Gallup finds that one in five employees worldwide currently feels lonely at work. This is not just a personal problem, it's an organizational issue as well (work loneliness is having a huge impact on healthcare costs, absenteeism, and turnover). Interesting research in the latest Harvard Business Review from Connie Noonan Hadley and Sarah Wright sheds light on the problem, including some practical tools for measuring and addressing loneliness in your workplace. https://lnkd.in/e4BajE6N #loneliness #wellbeing

Drowning under a pile of emails, answering endless calls, and an aching back — sounds familiar? Stress remains an unwelcome companion for most workers regardless of their respective industries. Unfortunately, stress's impact on the body can be rather long-lasting. Employers in Singapore have sensed lower work productivity and higher turnover rates in recent years. Stress often engulfs the morale and spirit of office workers and propels them to throw in the towel eventually. Statistics have shown an alarming rise in stress levels at workplaces, and indicate the likely consequences of such a trend. It is crucial for employers to promote healthier workplace habits and ensure that their employees receive sufficient support for their physical and emotional needs. #worklifebalance #mentalhealth #workplacestress

Burnout is on the rise in Australia, driven by an "excessive" work culture. While new laws granting the "right to disconnect" after hours are a positive step, a cultural shift is needed to address the root cause. Research by the European Union emphasises that policies alone are insufficient without awareness raising and effective measures to limit after-hours connections. According to the World Health Organisation, burnout is a consequence of chronic workplace stress, with women being more susceptible. Employers have a crucial role in fostering resilience by promoting work-life balance. A study by International SOS reveals that 80% of risk experts foresee stress and burnout impacting businesses and employees significantly this year. Implementing preventative measures, prioritising well-being, and sustainable performance from the top down are crucial steps in mitigating burnout risk. Employees can also take proactive steps by setting boundaries, such as turning off notifications and removing work emails from their phones. By collectively addressing burnout, we can create a healthier work environment for all. #WorkLifeBalance #BurnoutPrevention #EmployeeWellbeing #ESG #Sustainability

That sense of belonging is so incredibly important. Clearly if people are feeling lonely we should just bring them all back in the office… Oh the sarcasm! Here are a few easy things we can do to help our teams feel engaged and shift that lonely feeling to a sense of belonging: Creating Opportunities for Your Team to Connect: • Encourage Relationship-Building: Ensure your team knows that building relationships is not only acceptable but encouraged. Don’t just assume they know this; past experiences may impact here and some employees maybe hesitant to engage in casual conversations, fearing they might get “caught” chatting. • Support During Difficult Times: On particularly tough days when employees might feel like giving up, having strong workplace relationships can be crucial. These connections provide emotional support and a sense of solidarity, making it easier for employees to persevere. Aligning Roles with Organizational Goals: • Purposeful Job Descriptions: When crafting job descriptions, consider how each role connects to the overall goals of the organization. Clearly articulate the objectives and demonstrate how the role aligns with the organization’s vision, mission, and goals. • Focus on Alignment from the Start: By emphasizing this alignment from the beginning, employees can see the significance of their work within the bigger picture. This understanding can be especially motivating during challenging times, helping employees stay focused and committed. Facilitate Regular Team Interactions: • Regular Check-Ins: Schedule regular team meetings, not just for work updates, but also for casual catch-ups. Most importantly, remember your 1:1s. • Team-Building Activities: Organize team-building activities or social events to foster camaraderie and strengthen bonds among team members. Promote Open Communication: • Feedback Channels: Create multiple channels for open communication, where employees feel safe to share their thoughts and concerns. This could be through anonymous surveys, suggestion boxes, or 1:1 meetings. • Transparent Leadership: Encourage leaders to be transparent and approachable. When employees see their leaders being open and honest, it can foster a culture of trust and belonging. Recognize and Celebrate Achievements: • Celebrate Milestones: Recognize and celebrate both individual and team achievements. It’s so validating to have others see your unique skill set and work as something worth celebrating. Remember, recognition isn’t only a leadership role, in fact I believe it’s one of the easiest ways to be seen as a leader - no matter your role. It’s hard to read that 1 in 5 employees feel lonely in the workplace, but it’s even harder to read the below post and do nothing to change it. Ensuring your team has a sense of belonging is an everyone role. Great post by Nerry!
