What a great two days at the HR + L&D Innovation & Tech Fest! The Accurate Background (Australia) crew has had a fantastic time talking to hundreds of HR movers and shakers about their employment screening needs. We also had a lot of interest in our giant jar of blue gems guessing game, with some nifty noise-cancelling headphones up for grabs. Guesses of how many gems were inside the jar ranged from a low of 325 to a high of 9,158. While it was a very close call, with near winner guesses of 1,200 and 1,207. The winning guess belonged to Francesca Dampney, one of the wonderful delegates from Costa, with the very astute pick of 1,201. The actual number of gems in the jar was 1,203.5 (we sneakily included a broken half gem in there to make it even more challenging). Thank you to everyone who stopped by our booth and made this event such a success! It was a pleasure connecting with industry leaders and sharing insights on background screening. We're excited to keep the conversations going and look forward to future collaborations. A special shoutout to Kaili Borg Adam Beer Aaron Hayes Brooke Wolff Zahra Nathwani (MAHRI) Arnie Lautaimi and Jazz Andrews. --- For more content from Accurate Background (Australia) and information about our employment screening services and how they can help you build a trusted workforce check out our Linktree here: https://lnkd.in/eGtSeC6p #talentacquisition #hr #peopleandculture #employmentscreening #recruitment #recruitmentlife #recruitmentaustralia

A new report from the University of Melbourne reveals how essential remote work has become to Australian employees. Flexibility isn’t just a perk—it’s now a core expectation, driving productivity, well-being, and job satisfaction. The research highlights the risks of rigid in-office mandates, emphasising the need for tailored policies that balance flexibility with collaboration. It’s a timely reminder for organisations to rethink workplace strategies in a way that meets diverse employee needs. The return-to-office debate is heating up, with some companies pushing for full-time attendance while others double down on the value of flexibility. Recent findings show 89% of Australian organisations still support hybrid work, with many offering options like adjusted hours or even four-day workweeks to enhance work-life balance and engagement. Interestingly, many employees are willing to forgo a pay rise in exchange for flexible arrangements, highlighting the shift in workplace priorities. When managed well, flexibility benefits everyone—helping attract and retain talent while fostering a positive workplace culture. Workplace privacy is a critical issue impacting trust and employee well-being. A recent case highlights the distress caused when an employer disclosed an employee’s medical condition without consent, raising concerns about gaps in Australia’s privacy laws. These gaps make it difficult for employees to assert their rights, leaving them vulnerable to stigma and discrimination. Employers must take proactive steps to safeguard sensitive information, ensuring policies, training, and empathy are at the forefront. By handling disclosures with care, organisations can build trust, retain talent, and foster inclusive cultures. As discussions around updates to the Privacy Act continue, now is the time to reflect: How does your workplace protect employee privacy? The Workplace Gender Equality Agency (WGEA) reports that 99% of Australian employers have formal policies against sexual harassment, and 85% of CEOs are now heavily engaged in these measures. Yet, only 55% of Boards show similar commitment. While proactive steps like training and prevention frameworks are growing, significant gaps remain: many companies lack comprehensive anonymous reporting options, and harassment still goes underreported. The agency underscores the need for stronger leadership involvement and promises future progress tracking.
