I haven’t posted much on LinkedIn in a bit, but June marks a big milestone for me and my Omnichannel Fulfillment team that I want to celebrate – it’s the one-year anniversary of Flexport's acquisition of Shopify Logistics/Deliverr Inc. As I reflect on this past year, I am overcome with deep gratitude and pride for all the team has built, transformed, and accomplished for merchants in such a short period of time. Integrating two robust businesses and navigating through complexity and ambiguity was no easy feat. On June 6, we closed the acquisition, and a mere 90 days later we launched the first-ever #supplychain product that married international freight services, domestic omnichannel and #ecommerce fulfillment, and trade and financial services. This rapidly evolved the legacy Deliverr Seller Portal into the first platform to connect a customer’s supply chain from factory floor to customer door – now known as Flexport’s Omnichannel Seller Portal. This consumer-grade product lowers the barriers for merchants of all sizes to not only manage their end-to-end logistics in one spot, but make #omnichannel growth achievable by all. We knew from the beginning that our operations, customer service, and execution had to be world-class. We acquired a fragmented network of 50+ warehouses operated by a myriad of 3Ps. This model was a drain on our profitability, and prevented us from consistently driving the quality our customers expect. We designed a new operating model and invested in consolidating our network to five strategically placed hubs that Flexport will own and operate. This rapidly improved our unit economics, but also allowed us to take the reins on performance. We improved our Dock-to-Stock speed, making customer inventory available twice as fast. Our On-Time-Shipping is 99%, and our On-Time-Delivery is 97%+. With this consolidated network, our five hubs now represent more cumulative square footage than we had before, allowing us to co-locate multiple services under one roof for faster processing and scale 5X during Peak, all while maintaining (and in some cases increasing) the speed of delivery. To help merchants grow, Flexport now integrates with more than 30+ eCommerce platforms and #B2B retailers including Shopify, Amazon, Walmart, Costco Wholesale, Target, Nordstrom, and our newest addition SHEIN. Ultimately, this gives merchants flexibility/optionality in how they serve customers with the simplicity of one inventory pool. Since we launched in September, we received substantial interest from merchants, with over 25K sign-ups to the Portal. Thousands of merchants have entrusted us with their goods, booking tens of thousands of shipments, and moving tens of millions of units through our network this past year. We’re on track to crush prior records this Peak, growing alongside our diverse merchants, making fulfillment a long-term profitable growth engine for Flexport. In just 1 year, we learned a ton, built a lot, and delivered even more.

The recent news of RXO acquiring Coyote Logistics has made me reflect on my time at Coyote, the first company I worked for and the most transformative experience of my career. I joined Coyote as part of a team of 30 employees, all driven by a shared vision and determination. Over the years, we worked tirelessly, scaling the company to an incredible $1.8 billion valuation when acquired by UPS. It was a journey of challenges, learning, growth, and immense satisfaction. To this day, I still consider myself a Coyote—a part of the pack. Everywhere I go, I encounter former Coyotes who have become leaders at great companies or founders themselves. This strong network is proof of the culture we built and the continuing spirit of Coyote Logistics. There's always a sense of pride in what we built together, the camaraderie we shared, and our impact on the industry. I want to thank Jeffrey Silver and Marianne Silver for having such a significant impact on all of us. As RXO embarks on this new chapter with Coyote, I feel a mix of nostalgia and excitement for the company's future. Focus on your core competency There has been much said & even more written about RXO, Inc.'s acquisition of Coyote Logistics. My good friend, Grace Sharkey 🚛🤖💙 wrote of the deal over the weekend. For those in the business, this deal comes as little surprise. It's no secret that UPS has struggled to make sense of the volatile world of the brokerage industry. When it's good, it's great, but when it's bad... it's really bad. And lately, it's been really bad. While leaders are tasked with unlocking new revenue, not all that glitters is gold. And oftentimes those same leaders make the case that an acquisition creates the magical formulae of 1 +1 = 3. So let's do the math: UPS bought Coyote Logistics $1.8 billion in 2015. RXO, Inc. will buy Coyote Logistics from UPS for $1.025 billion sometime in 2024. 9 years & nearly $1 billion (that's billion with a 'B') in value gone. This is not an aberration. Brokering freight is increasingly commoditized & the margins of 2015 will likely not materialize for some time. I believe that RXO, Inc. got a great deal. I believe Coyote Logistics is a great company. I rarely post on LinkedIn, but since this month marks my 10th anniversary at Coyote Logistics, and is likely the last year I'll be able to call myself a Coyote (officially), it feels like a good time to try it out. Like many of us in logistics, I started at Coyote thinking that I'd spend a year or 2 at the company before moving on to something bigger and better. I spent the first years learning the basics; figuring out who I was an operator, spending late nights in the office, even later nights at the bar, and showing up the next morning with a story to tell (probably along with a hangover and some bagels). As I grew in my role, I expanded friendships inside and outside of Coyote. I learned from the mentors that I met along the way (you know who you are). I grew relationships with customers and received compliments on my work, but probably (definitely) not as much as I got yelled at when something went wrong. I learned how to have tough conversations, how to think outside the box and how to empower my teams to make decisions, and mistakes, as long as they learned from them. I won’t say that every day of the past 10 years has been rainbows - 2023 was by far the most challenging year of my career, and even though there is no crying in freight, tears were shed. What I will say is that joining Coyote was one of the best decisions that I have ever made, and that it has helped shape me into the person, and professional, that I am today. I can’t say that I’m not nervous about what the next year will bring; there are big changes ahead. But I also know that Coyote culture will remain strong. We will have each other’s backs and we will grow as we welcome new teammates, leaders and perspectives (technically RXO, Inc. will be welcoming us? But this is my post so it’s fine). OK enough blabbing. Happy 10 year anniversary to the Coyote class of 9/22/2014, wherever you are today. Thanks for everything, and cheers to the next 10 😊

Foundationally, our freight tech company is different from why most got started. Our “why” and mission are different from most… and it is ok to be different. I have felt the pain directly of buying freight tech and being burned by freight tech companies that got into our industry for the wrong reasons. Everyone is worried about USPS eliminating ounce based pricing. It may seem big on the surface, but the broader impact wont be HUGE. Let's dive in. For the average shipper, the breakdown of shipping costs is less of a concern than the overall cost of the package. One major concern is unpredictable costs without ounce-based pricing. However, most eCommerce businesses already navigate complex pricing models. Simplifying the pricing could increase predictability for shippers. This change may streamline decisions, especially for high-volume package senders. The shipping landscape is highly competitive as we all know. If USPS moves away from ounce-based pricing, other carriers may either follow suit or double down on offering competitive alternatives. Shippers should always have options. Competition will drive innovation. Regardless of what happens, the success of any carrier is a combination between quality and price. Of course pricing is important, but it's the overall experience that keeps them coming back. If it was cheap and took 3 weeks to deliver packages, there would be problems. But that's not the case. USPS is cheap and has relatively fast speeds - most under 5 business days. Will other carriers like DHL ecom, UPS Mail Innovations & OSM have to change? Sure. But everything will shake out for the better. Everything is always scarier at first glance. A smooth sea never made a skilled sailor. #ecommerce #logistics #shipping

This is the funniest (and probably most realistic) feedback we've gotten about Sync Logistics Training: "Honestly, I was expecting this training to be dumb and a complete waste of time, but I actually found it very informative. It has good info that even someone more experienced could learn from." In my experience, this is how most people perceive training. Very few people actually WANT to go through additional training. I'll be the first to admit that your office probably isn't full of brokers demanding to be pulled off the floor to do training instead.
