Data released by Motive has sparked excitement in that some now believe there is an upcoming shift in the truckload market based on truck visits to retailer distribution centers (e.g., https://lnkd.in/gVEK9_dJ). To quote from the link, “When it comes to performance across sectors, department stores, apparel & electronics (+32.9% YoY), and home improvement (+24.4% YoY) were top performers in June. Grocery & Superstores and Discount Retailers & Wholesalers also jumped 22.1% and 13% YoY respectively. We’re seeing particularly strong momentum in brick-and-mortar retail as these stores anticipate a very strong summer peak season.” There’s just one problem: there is a probability of 0.00000001 that Motive’s data is representative of national retail activity in these sectors. Two charts. Thoughts:   •Top chart shows Motive’s data showing trucks visiting the top 50 retailers’ distribution centers as an index from the link. This is what I’ll be critiquing. •Bottom chart shows inflation adjusted (a.k.a., “real”) sales (blue) and inflation adjusted (a.k.a., “real”) inventories (red) for building material, garden equipment, and supply dealers (NAICS 444). Data are seasonally adjusted to make trends clearer and set as indexes such that 100 = 2019. •Here is my critique: real sales for building material retailers as of June 2024 were down 0.7% year-over-year. Real inventories in May 2024 were down 3.3% year-over-year and trending down slightly. As such, it is mathematically impossible that we are seeing truck visits up 24.4% for a representative sample of home improvement stores. Implication: the math isn’t mathing on Motive’s retail trade index truck visit data. Moreover, much of the strong containerized import demand so far in 2024 has been due to (i) the easy comparison relative to the first half of 2023 as orders were curtailed to draw down inventories and (ii) pull forward due to port strike and tariff concerns. DAT’s dry van spot rates are $2.09 per mile with fuel, which remains below January’s $2.15 polar vortex reading. Focus on your core competency There has been much said & even more written about RXO, Inc.'s acquisition of Coyote Logistics. My good friend, Grace Sharkey 🚛🤖💙 wrote of the deal over the weekend. For those in the business, this deal comes as little surprise. It's no secret that UPS has struggled to make sense of the volatile world of the brokerage industry. When it's good, it's great, but when it's bad... it's really bad. And lately, it's been really bad. While leaders are tasked with unlocking new revenue, not all that glitters is gold. And oftentimes those same leaders make the case that an acquisition creates the magical formulae of 1 +1 = 3. So let's do the math: UPS bought Coyote Logistics $1.8 billion in 2015. RXO, Inc. will buy Coyote Logistics from UPS for $1.025 billion sometime in 2024. 9 years & nearly $1 billion (that's billion with a 'B') in value gone. This is not an aberration. Brokering freight is increasingly commoditized & the margins of 2015 will likely not materialize for some time. I believe that RXO, Inc. got a great deal. I believe Coyote Logistics is a great company. Automating the process of managing a truckload carrier is so much more than just assigning drivers to minimize empties. The hardest part is identifying the best loads, but this is so much harder than just grabbing the highest revenue loads. The reason? Because trucks can’t fly. Not only do we have to careful schedule drivers right now, we have to anticipate what we would have to do in the future… …an uncertain future. This means finding the best loads given where your drivers are now, and where they might be several days in the future. And people try to tell me that managing a truckload fleet is not rocket science. They are right… it is much harder.

I have long suspected FreightWaves data on truckload tender volumes and accepted loads are strongly weighted towards consumer-centric freight, especially containerized imports. Their most recent market update provides more evidence for my claim. Consider the following: •Accepted tenders have been up ~7% in 2024 from 2023. Do you know what else has been up by a similar amount in 2024 from 2023? Metric tonnage of containerized waterborne imports from Asia, which are up 14.5% year-over-year for 2024 from 2023 on a year-to-date basis. •The article mentions that tender volumes are up 15.8% today than in 2019. As tender rejection rates in 2019 and today are similar, tender volumes and load volumes would result in similar conclusions. I'm very confident that this isn't the case when you look at all of trucking freight (my trucking ton-mile index's most recent readings are within 2% of 2019 levels). However, containerized imports have steadily increased since 2019 and are following the pre-COVID trendline (and are up by roughly the amount FW's is reporting for their trucking volume data). Implication: you need to look closely at different data sources for trucking freight volumes to try and infer what industries receive the most weight. I've long felt Cass is industrial-heavy. FreightWaves appears to be the opposite. My own trucking ton-mile index is heavily slanted towards domestic manufacturing (specifically food, chemicals ex pharma, nonmetallic mineral products, paper, and primary metals) because of the Commodity Flow Survey. Things to keep in mind as you select which indexes to give more weight when undertaking strategic planning (e.g., if you are a carrier with lots of exposure to containerized imports, FreightWaves' data would likely be your preferred metric). #supplychain #supplychainmanagement #shipsandshipping #freight #trucking https://lnkd.in/giQiCCHf

Recall my post just a few days ago about assessing validity claims concerning data? I was struck by a few statements made in this recent FreightWaves' article I just came across this morning that makes be even more strongly question how representative their tender volume data truly is (https://lnkd.in/g5XV3gts). Consider the following quotes: •"Dallas’ outbound tender volumes (OTVI.DAL) have grown approximately 50% over the past five years compared to the national average of 18%." •"Phoenix demand is up approximately 60% since April 2019." My simple question: over-the-road dry van capacity has increased just 4% over this period based on the BLS's payroll data for NAICS 484121: General Freight Trucking, Long-Distance, Truckload. We know from separate Census Bureau data compiled from IRS tax records and highly reliable surveys that nonemployer firms saw just a 1.5 percentage point increase in their share of revenue (from 18.5% in 2019 to 21% in 2022). As such, capacity hasn't grown more than 4.5% across all of trucking. If freight volumes were truly up 18% over this period, wouldn't we be in an incredibly tight market? Curious is anyone else can make sense of these discrepancies. My answer is simple: FreightWaves' tender volume data aren't capturing all trucking freight, and instead are capturing a nonrepresentative slice of the pie. #supplychain #supplychainmanagement #freight #trucking #transportation #logistics

Rumor has it, mergers and acquisitions in the 3PL space have cooled dramatically, as strategic buyers have pulled back from making acquisitions. This leaves private equity firms, who are hyper focused on investing in profitable companies at much lower valuations than we’ve seen in recent years, while avoiding risky or distressed businesses. So, what does this mean for underfunded 3PLs already struggling with extreme margin compression and higher capital costs? The days of 3PLs being valued like software companies are over, especially for those that aren't growing profitably. Who will survive now that buyers are no longer in the market for 3PL's with topline only growth? And what does this mean for the brands using them?
