If you are considering small business opportunities in Massachusetts, consider becoming a solar system owner. A solar system owner can be either an individual, business, or organization that owns a photovoltaic (PV) solar system installed on their property. As a business owner, you can provide Third-Party Ownership services. Basically, a company (you) installs and owns the solar system on the property and sells the generated power to the property owner through a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) or leases the system to the property owner. This model often has lower upfront costs, making it more accessible. Solar system owners in Massachusetts may also participate in state programs like SMART (Solar Massachusetts Renewable Target), which provides incentives for small- to large-scale solar projects based on energy production. As I look across the U.S. at the variety of new tech hubs being developed, I am bullish on the climate sector as a space that can provide equity to all. Compared to biotech, quantum, and other highly technical areas that require a high level of engineering skill or technical understanding to enter, I find that the climate sector is more accessible and understandable than others. I think the industry and those within it must develop a level of awareness around engaging new participants with transferrable skills. If we only look for individuals with multiple years of climate experience for policy, technical, or leadership positions to tell us how it has been done and leave low-level jobs to new entrants within the industry, we will bring the same inequities of the past into the future and never bridge new ways of thinking and being into the work. These are new times, and we should all have a seat at the table.

We hear that again and again from our strategic partners in real estate in every major asset class. In certain markets, C&I solar does make sense via things like premium rents and regulatory headwinds. (Can also consider structuring leases to overcome split incentive issue, or even renting the roof.) Update!
