How you know if a brand outreach email is a SCAM! This past week I was at the Sony Kando event in Santa Barbara where I had the pleasure of listening to a workshop by Tyler Chou aka The Creators Attorney where she shared that one of her clients had been scammed and hacked by a fake agency. Thankfully she was able to recover the account with minimal damage - but here are some of my tips on recognizing scam emails! 1. The email is not a business email - you want to make sure the email is something like [email protected] , not [email protected] 2. The email is not addressed specifically to you! I personally never respond to emails that do not address me by my name. 3. The email is poorly written with multiple spelling and grammar errors 4. The offer is vague, or overly exciting/promising. To verify legitimate agencies, I start by going to their website, and looking up the name on Linkedin. In this case, their website was extremely weird and obviously fake and I couldn't find the agent on Linkedin. Ask for the names of past influencers they have worked with, and reach out to them to verify their experience. These are just a few tips I've learned from my career as a creator as well as somebody who reaches out to creators for my position at Popfly.com! What other tips do you have?

Creators need to get real about their future According to Linktree's latest report, 70% of creators earned under $49k LY Who is the $500B creator economy by 2027 for if the current model isn't built for creators The math isn't mathing Affiliate marketing is the #1 revenue stream Yet most brands offer 5-10% commission & keep 90% of the value Creators struggle to maintain always on content for scraps while platforms keep launching more affiliate tools to make brands + platforms richer TikTok's LTK, Amazon, Walmart integrations perpetuate the problem by making it easier to earn less promoting the same products as every other creator vs solving the real issue of creator ownership & value capture But also w/ direct product links in comments, why do we need link in bio tools? Creators want to build something more substantial & predictable than viral moments that sell things that aren't even on trend or durable enough to pass down generations There's massive fatigue w/ affiliate marketing b/c creators can't differentiate themselves from the masses How can they w/the same products? Don't be afraid to push back on Creators/Influencers when they send you a draft for a sponsored post for your Brand. Even though you should give a good amount of creative control (Or else just do paid ads) You should still review the draft critically and see if the Creator checked off all the required items in the Campaign Brief Focus on your delivery such as HOW you share the feedback The Creator likely knows what works best for their audience Especially the larger Creators But some Creators are new to sponsorships ESPECIALLY LinkedIn Creators (It could be their first ever sponsorship) Here's what we do at Creator Match 🧩 Instead of telling the Creator WHAT to do differently We may leave a comment having the Creator think differently by sharing a few ideas Add links to past posts from that Creator that you liked (to get inspo from) Or even share posts that they should emulate from other Creators All of these checks should happen BEFORE the Brand reviews the draft So their review is quick, simple, & easy Anyone else in the Creator Economy or Influencer Marketing world agree/disagree? About a year ago I made one content decision that has since saved me hours of wasted productivity. I no longer worry about how a post will perform. I've stopped trying to game the system, looking at trends or trending topics. Instead, I imagine I'm in an ongoing conversation with my ideal client. What do they need to hear from me or my colleagues to help them get through the day? Now, everything I create has the intent and purpose of being in conversation with my audience. Granted, it's often a one-sided conversation, but that's no different from when I created TV for decades. It's useful information that I find interesting and want to share with others.
