🌍💥 Unmasking Big Meat & Dairy: The Hidden Culprits of Climate Inaction 💥 Following on from the February 2024 report by The Freedom Food Alliance disinformation report, Changing Markets Foundation has continued the conversation on how the powerful agribusiness giants are deploying distraction, delay, and derailment tactics to obstruct global environmental progress. Key findings include: 🐄 Extensive lobbying to block climate policies 🐄 Greenwashing and weak net zero targets 🐄 Targeted disinformation campaigns to Gen Z 🐄 ‘Unproven technofixes’ that taxpayers foot the bill for,  🐄 Delaying much-needed transition to more plant-based diets. Liking this @NPR special reporting on food and climate change. Not a panacea for ag in climate change but regenerative farming practices (diversifying, cover cropping, no-till, dry farming….) can increase soil health and reduce erosion, water runoff and water pollution. Even if long term carbon sequestration levels are as yet unproven, preservation of farmable land or regenerative farming equals resilience and that is a lot of steps in the right direction.

Say what you will about Millennials, but we're a resilient bunch. In the face of #climatechange, young #farmers are digging deep (and planting trees) to adapt to the new normal. Everyone take notes! In Vermont, "100 year floods" seem to come every 10 years now -- sometimes, even more frequently than that. Much of the state's affordable farmland sits in the flood plain, and young farmers who frequently work this "cheap" land are sitting ducks. How do you mitigate a risk like this? So far, young farmers in Vermont have... ✅ Produced a diverse output of crops and livestock which means if one is lost, another may survive ✅ Replanted their fields in narrow strips, alternating crops, so that taller plants can offer some protection to smaller plants ✅ Added yards of topsoil and raised beds to protect plants from rising waters ✅ Experimented with planting vegetables near banks of clover and rye so the deep roots will hold the soil in place and keep it from washing away ✅ Planted hundreds of trees along river buffer zones And, perhaps most importantly, ✅ Formed close ties between other young farmers to more easily share strategies and equipment and help each other harvest early if heavy weather is on the horizon. It sounds like these farmers are heading in a #regenerative direction. What else can be done? Although resilient, young farmers still need help and are asking for ➡ On farm technical advisors to provide further support and ➡ Mental health services. Like any other agriculture sector standards must be developed implemented and self monitored, this must be backed by sound logical uncumbersome legislation and regulation within an enabling environment for farming fish 🐟

I've seen this article about Regenerative corn/maize being posted a lot in my #foodsystems circles, and was interested to take a deeper dive into it. Some reactions: -It was cool to see that some of the farmers in the study are from my home state of #Nebraska, not far from the farming community where I grew up. -It's truly wonderful to see farmers in the Midwestern US being able to increase profitability while investing in #soilhealth, reducing pesticide usage, and improving #biodiversity. This is something I'm celebrating, and I wish we could see more farmers adopting in that context. However, this section gave me pause: "Regenerative farms produced 29% less corn grain than conventional operations" "They also received higher value for their crop by receiving an organic premium, by selling their grain directly to consumers as seed or feed" What's difficult about translating this for smallholders in sub-Saharan Africa is that the context can be quite different: a) For many vulnerable farmers One Acre Fund works with, a 29% decrease in grain yields can be devastating to their families. b) All of the nine countries in sub-Saharan Africa One Acre Fund works in are currently net importers of cereals and grains. c) There is currently no regenerative organic price premium to offset the 29% drop in yields for staple crops like maize or beans in the smallholder context in sub-Saharan Africa (higher value crops like cacao and coffee are a slightly different story). Bottom line: We need to make #Regenerative practices like cover crops make financial sense for smallholders (which is one of the reasons why One Acre Fund joined the CASH Coalition: to figure out how to make regenerative practices economically viable for #smallholders across the world). https://lnkd.in/duRdHhur

When we follow the principles of soil health and let those principles guide our management decisions, we harness the self-healing, self-regulating, and self-perpetuating capacity of natural systems to be profitable. I love this comparison of different grower ecosystems. Unfortunately, the business of growing businesses focuses on product x fit and access to capital and often ignores leadership effectiveness. We're starting a climate blog on our website, focused on what the data-driven science tells us about climate change, the outlook, consequences and what we need to do about it. Understanding what might happen when and where is critical to mitigating the consequences of climate change, which have been illustrated in a small way in 2023.
