“COP29 is about the new climate finance goal to unlock climate action in the Global South. Without finance, talk about climate action will remain just that – talk. They say there is no such thing as a free lunch – well there’s no such thing as a free climate target either. If we’re serious about climate action, we have to pay for climate action. Sticking the Global South with an escalating climate bill is not only unfair, it’s a recipe for certain planetary breakdown. For the past five years, Pact-led, USAID-funded REFRESH project has been at the forefront of conserving Lake Malawi’s incredible freshwater biodiversity, working tirelessly to restore fisheries productivity and ensure sustainable management practices in the region. Last week, Pact hosted an event to commemorate the impact of the project as it comes to a close. Some of the key accomplishments include: 🐟 Approval of the Fisheries Devolution Plan: A major milestone in fisheries governance, decentralizing management to local councils. 🐟 Digitization of Fisheries Data Collection: Modernizing fish catch and effort data collection, improving the accuracy and timeliness of reporting. 🐟 Establishment of Fish Sanctuaries: Crucial for rebuilding fish populations and promoting biodiversity. 🐟 Strengthening Fisheries Enforcement: Providing engine boats to support enforcement efforts and reduce illegal fishing activities. From the #Foodbank Hunger Report 2024: "Food relief charities are continuing to experience heightened demand, not only because of ongoing need in the community, but also due to an increasing awareness amongst those in food insecure households of where to seek support (47%, up 12% on 2023). 26% of food insecure households have accessed formal food relief in the past 12 months, up from 24% in 2023. This increase has been driven by those who are severely food insecure, 30% of whom have accessed help in 2024 vs 26% in 2023.” Huge shout out of thanks & gratitude to those making an impact already in this space. 🌳 Humans, animals, and nature are inextricably linked, stabilizing the planet's ecosystem. These are the main reasons why USAID Conserve is working with community and NGO conservation partners to protect and conserve Cambodia's natural resources in the Prey Lang extended landscape, around Tonle Sap Lake, and in coastal areas. This effort aims to protect ecosystems and improve the livelihoods of rural communities to ensure a sustainable future. 🌱 USAID Conserve will support the development of terrestrial carbon projects in the Prey Lang extended landscape and new blue and teal carbon projects in coastal Cambodia and around Tonle Sap Lake. As a Peace Corps volunteer in Zambia (2009-11), we worked with local communities to help address some of the most pressing health challenges facing the world: HIV/AIDS, malaria, TB, clean water, maternal health, and more. Maybe, we thought, other communities would learn of our success and try to replicate it. And another community. And another... "Think globally. Act locally," as the PC mantra goes. At the Urban Sustainability Directors Network (USDN) and the Southeast Sustainability Directors Network, we embody the same approach; we're working in communities across the country (and Canada!) to empower them to advance local climate action. Addressing global challenges like GHG emissions, excessive heat, flooding, and much, much more at the local level. By helping local governments build trust with community members and equipping them with the knowledge and skills they need to succeed, we are helping to address the greatest climate challenges facing our world. As COP29 approaches, ActionAid’s mission is clear: we’re advocating for climate justice that puts people over profits.
