At ITACUS - the ITA Committee on Underground Space, we’re harnessing innovation in a different but equally transformative way—by reimagining underground spaces for climate resilience. Our recent projects in Helsinki and Switzerland, published in collaboration with the UN Environment Programme, explore how underground data centres can support sustainability by reducing land use, enhancing energy efficiency, and integrating with circular systems. AI has tremendous potential to help address sustainability challenges and is undoubtedly here to stay. However, alongside driving positive changes, it also demands massive energy consumption for data centers, relies on rare minerals, and contributes to rapid hardware obsolescence, resulting in significant e-waste. I look forward to seeing how Microsoft will effectively address these challenges through innovation.
Really inspiring to see AI being deployed for such meaningful environmental impact across diverse contexts! The water conservation achievements in Chile are particularly striking - 50 billion liters annually is remarkable. I'm especially intrigued by Peace Parks' work using AI for wildlife protection in South Africa - this intersection of conservation and technology seems like a powerful model that could be adapted for other endangered species initiatives. It's encouraging to see these concrete examples of how AI can support sustainability goals beyond just theory or small-scale pilots.
