📢 Verra has launched a secondary tier of projects to pilot its new Scope 3 Standard (S3S) Program and to adapt an additional three VCS Program methodologies. Interested to see how the annual soil carbon stock changes look like at parcel level detail for the Netherlands? Check the link below for more details and the results of 2022. Within the project EO4CSM (funded by ESA), we are developing a methodology that can monitor soil carbon sequestration of ~520.000 parcels in the Netherlands. The methodology is based on the dynamic carbon turnover model RothC (https://shorturl.at/pg4o4), which will be coupled with Earth Observation (EO) data at parcel level. The EO data provides more detailed and more accurate information on vegetation cover, crop status (main crop AND cover crop) and field management practices (grassland renewal activities). The improvements not only lead to more accurate and realistic monitoring of soil carbon sequestration for the national LULUCF (Land Use, Land Use Change and Forestry) reporting (https://shorturl.at/8UPY8), it also provides a basis for carbon farming practices at parcel/farm level. It was a pleasure to host a panel dialogue between the mining and forestry sectors here at #COP16Colombia. Co-hosted by International Sustainable Forestry Coalition and UNEP-WCMC, the dialogue explored how companies with extensive landholdings can contribute more to the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework. With many thanks to David Brand, Ian Hudson and John C. H. Lindberg FRSA for their insights and contributions. Key messages 💡 Managing land responsibly requires organisations to incorporate different spheres of knowledge into their decision making. Recognising different forms of knowledge and value is central to achieving successful outcomes for people and planet. 🤝 Full and ongoing engagement with Indigenous Peoples and local communities is central. Building trust and dialogue should be incorporated at the earliest possible stages. 🌴 Partnerships, including public-private partnerships, are integral to filling knowledge and capacity gaps, creating cohesive outcomes, and realising shared value. Learning from other sectors is also important to amplify good practice and scale solutions. 🦚 Having the right incentives to ensure sustainability and deliver ongoing value to different stakeholders. Examples of financial innovations like blended finance, investment platforms and public private partnerships were shared as part of the discussion.
