Hence the neologism, banalytics – data that appears on first sight to be useful, but in practice diverts attention from the real issue. 🚨 𝑨 𝑺𝒖𝒓𝒆-𝑺𝒉𝒐𝒕 𝑹𝒆𝒄𝒊𝒑𝒆 𝒇𝒐𝒓 𝒀𝒐𝒖𝒓 𝑻𝒆𝒂𝒎 𝑯𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒀𝒐𝒖 𝒇𝒓𝒐𝒎 𝑾𝒊𝒕𝒉𝒊𝒏 & 𝑳𝒆𝒂𝒗𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒀𝒐𝒖 𝑨𝒍𝒍 𝑨𝒍𝒐𝒏𝒆🚨 A few years ago, I was working with a global client with whom I had built a strong rapport. I genuinely enjoyed our collaboration. But then, due to sudden organizational restructuring, his position was replaced by a new leader—a lady eager to make her mark. Within days of her taking charge, the team’s atmosphere shifted dramatically. The once motivated and cohesive team began to disengage. Tensions rose, and the team was on the verge of breaking apart. I had to step in personally to address the situation. What struck me was that this new leader was well-intentioned. She genuinely cared about the team and wanted to drive positive change. So, what went wrong? 🤔 She made a critical leadership mistake I’ve seen happen too often—implementing too many changes too fast. While change is often necessary, rushing into it without understanding the existing dynamics can lead to mistrust, low confidence, and a poor rapport with the team. If you’re stepping into a new leadership role, especially with an unfamiliar team, here are three crucial steps to ensure a smoother transition: 1. 𝑶𝒃𝒔𝒆𝒓𝒗𝒆 & 𝑼𝒏𝒅𝒆𝒓𝒔𝒕𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝑪𝒖𝒓𝒓𝒆𝒏𝒕 𝑳𝒂𝒏𝒅𝒔𝒄𝒂𝒑𝒆 🌍 Before making any changes, take time to observe the existing environment. Understand the team’s dynamics, ongoing projects, and current challenges. This helps you identify what’s working well and what truly needs improvement, avoiding disruption to what’s already functioning smoothly. 2. 𝘽𝙪𝙞𝙡𝙙 𝙍𝙖𝙥𝙥𝙤𝙧𝙩 𝙬𝙞𝙩𝙝 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙏𝙚𝙖𝙢 🤝 Your team’s trust is your most valuable asset. Invest time in getting to know them—both professionally and personally. Listen to their concerns, understand their motivations, and be transparent about your vision. Building rapport doesn’t happen overnight, but showing genuine interest in your team’s well-being lays the foundation for a strong, collaborative relationship. 3. 𝑷𝙧𝒐𝙥𝒐𝙨𝒆 𝑰𝙣𝒄𝙧𝒆𝙢𝒆𝙣𝒕𝙖𝒍 𝑪𝙝𝒂𝙣𝒈𝙚𝒔 🛠️ Once you’ve understood the landscape and built rapport, introduce changes gradually. Propose small, manageable adjustments that can be tested and refined over time. This approach helps the team adapt more easily and allows for feedback, reducing resistance while driving progress. Reflecting on our 2011 newsletter, which was published in De Ware Tijd, research had shown that “servant leadership” was a foreign concept to many managers and leaders across various organizations. Yet, after a year of dedicated publications and discussions, it was heartening to see everyone embracing the idea of servant leadership. It’s a reminder of the power of persistent dialogue and education in shifting mindsets. However, it’s unfortunate that over time, political parties began using it as one of their many buzzwords, diluting its true essence. Servant leadership is not a fleeting trend; it’s a deeply rooted commitment to serve and uplift others, putting the needs of people first. Let’s continue to champion authentic leadership that inspires, serves, and makes a meaningful difference, beyond any political agenda.

It's all about the Money! Forget about meeting people with talent and ambition, gaining an understanding of what drives them, what they define as success, how they would like to make a difference to transformation projects. It is about the money. At least that is what many change sponsors seem to think!? Jane pictured above is one of those brilliant people that I got to meet on a recent project and she is one of many people that I am so grateful to have met having worked with so many clients and sites all over the world. Don't get me wrong I appreciate money to but I love what I do (working with people) to earn it. People process and systems are the key components of any change. They cannot work or change independently but very often clients immediately consider the people component known as ... Business Change Management! It is not just a nice to have but a leading cause (along with data) for project failure, which is why I have super affordable options available and a guarantee - If the establish change approach does not demonstrate value you get your money back.

My first visionary drove me a bit crazy! But upon further reflection I discovered that it was mostly my fault. Early in my career, I worked with a Visionary whose speaking and leadership skills inspired me (𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐤 𝐨𝐟 𝐚𝐧𝐲𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐥𝐢𝐤𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬?). However, my emotional immaturity and inexperience led to misunderstandings and eventually, bitterness & resentment. I had to overcome this, and later I apologized to him, especially because he wasn’t even aware that he was doing things that bugged me, because I never appropriately challenged him on it. Over the course of 16 years, I’ve learned the importance of 𝐬𝐞𝐭𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐬 and 𝐚𝐝𝐝𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐢𝐬𝐬𝐮𝐞𝐬 𝐝𝐢𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐥𝐲 rather than harboring judgments. Looking back, I see that much of the responsibility was actually mine. Now, I focus on being curious, not critical. You choose to prioritize oral hygiene, committing to starting your day with a fresh, clean slate. Then, as you prepare breakfast, whether it’s a hearty meal or a quick bite, you’re making another decision; fueling your body and nourishing yourself for the day ahead. Now, let’s fast forward to this moment. Perhaps you find yourself debating whether to engage in a rigorous workout or simply take some time to rest and recharge. It’s essential to recognize that both options are valid, but ultimately, your decision to prioritize rest is just as valuable as choosing to exercise. (Based on a thought I have shared in my book "Relashuns to Relashines) You may keep on asking me, being a good friend, that I need to give you direct feedback however uncomfortable it may be. Yet, I will not. Because, I would wait for the right moment and right method. It would have to be in such a way that you get the message without feeling hurt. And there are ways to do it which need conscious learning. I understand from experience that giving you a direct uncomfortable feedback at that time when you are being emotional, may actually hurt you. Here’s where to start: If you feel stuck at work, it could be because the role doesn't vibe with your values, or maybe you’ve just settled into a comfort zone. Either way, identifying what’s holding you back is the first step to breaking free. Be the architect of your own career. To build something you actually enjoy, you’ve got to know yourself. Think about what brings you joy and meaning at work. While you probably can’t rewrite your whole job description, you can tweak it to highlight your unique talents and strengths. And remember, no matter how close your job comes to being “dreamy,” balance is key. Wow! This drawing about gifted children has gone completely viral, the Dutch version is shared massively on instagram and Facebook and LinkedIn. I come across it in all kinds of groups and on all kinds of accounts. People asked for a translation. How can this be? Because there are so many misunderstandings about highly gifted children and adults, and it is therefore very difficult for many parents with an highly gifted child to communicate about it. That is why they are so happy with this visual. It is very difficult for teachers to spot highly gifted children, because they are not always the ones with the highest scores. Because often they underperform due to boredom and show behaviour that is not easy to deal with. Highly gifted children consistently get too little challenge. Parents who recognise their child as gifted, usually have to tell this to teachers, because the teacher wouldn't notice without telling them. The highly gifted child adapts to their environment, the expected signs of higly giftedness are often not shown. A lot of parents feel understood by this visual. They use the drawing during parent teacher meetings to facilitate the discussion. They dare to have an easier conversation at school to ask for more challenging learning for their child. The visual creates clarity. Our brain processes pictures much faster than text, images attract more attention and the message is remembered much, much better.
