Reflecting on our 2011 newsletter, which was published in De Ware Tijd, research had shown that “servant leadership” was a foreign concept to many managers and leaders across various organizations. Yet, after a year of dedicated publications and discussions, it was heartening to see everyone embracing the idea of servant leadership. It’s a reminder of the power of persistent dialogue and education in shifting mindsets. However, it’s unfortunate that over time, political parties began using it as one of their many buzzwords, diluting its true essence. Servant leadership is not a fleeting trend; it’s a deeply rooted commitment to serve and uplift others, putting the needs of people first. Let’s continue to champion authentic leadership that inspires, serves, and makes a meaningful difference, beyond any political agenda.

One of the key areas I’m current working on is a reformulated Leadership Twilight Programme for this academic year. With an explicit emphasis on commonalities in approaches to leadership across Leaders at all levels, and a bridging of Middle and Senior Leadership, I have aligned our programme with five domains based around Andy Hargreaves ‘Leadership from the Middle’. They are (in order): Personal Leadership - Relational Leadership - Culturally Responsive Leadership - Ethical Leadership - Sustainable Leadership As Hargreaves writes, successful leadership requires 3 things: ‘a philosophy of inclusion that inspires everyone; a culture of norms, beliefs and habits that guides them; and a structure of time, space, roles and responsibilities that supports them’. I hope this will inspire the ongoing development of trust-based, reflective, self-improving leadership, as well as a collaborative culture of leadership across the school.

Seijts and Milani again remind us of the seminal importance of #character in shaping of #leadership. Their recent book is a master class on the leadership issue that I recommend as a must read for current and aspiring leaders. As I have argued in my 2023 memoir #PrivatePowerPublicPurpose” excellence of character defines the true leader. At a time when we see in our politics, in particular, deeply flawed individuals exerting power and influence and the normalization of stunningly bad behaviour marked by dishonesty and narcissism, we must demand better.
Our article "The character imperative: Creating a more just, prosperous, and sustainable future" is now officially published in Organizational Dynamics. Kimberley Young Milani and I believe that no level of competence or commitment will matter without the foundational leadership element of strong, well-developed character. Our conversations with global leaders reinforced our conviction that character development must be included in leadership conversations and development if we are going to help create leaders who are willing and able to tackle the grand challenges of our time and work towards a more prosperous, just, and inclusive society. The ultimate objective our paper is to encourage the reader to consider how each of us can raise the bar in our respective selves, teams, organizations, and communities by recognizing, measuring, fostering, and being leaders with good character. In short, we hope the reader comes to appreciate that character is not a niche topic or a nice-to-have. Simply put, character is utterly essential to good leadership and to individual and societal well-being. The article is based in part on our book "Character: What Contemporary Leaders Can Teach Us about Building a More Just, Prosperous, and Sustainable Future" available in stores and online through Amazon and Indigo. https://lnkd.in/geYV6cCj Ivey Business School at Western University The Ivey Academy at Ivey Business School Western University Ian O. The function of leadership is to produce more leaders, not more followers. - Ralph Nader This quote beautifully encapsulates the essence of effective leadership. True leadership isn't about exerting control or amassing a large number of followers. Instead, it's about empowering others to step into leadership roles themselves. Here are a few ways to cultivate leadership within your organization: Encourage Autonomy, Mentorship, Continuous Learning, Recognize and Celebrate By focusing on these principles, we not only build stronger teams but also create a legacy of leadership that sustains and drives long-term success.

This emphasizes the critical role of leadership in navigating ethical dilemmas and standing up for what is right, rather than simply maintaining harmony. It highlights that true leadership involves more than just avoiding conflict or pleasing everyone; it requires a commitment to addressing the significant moral issues of the time. Leaders must be prepared to make difficult decisions and take principled stands, even when it's not the easiest or most popular course of action. In doing so, they set a standard for integrity and help guide their communities or organizations toward a just and principled future.
