  • Recently, the European People's Party (#EPP) published its position paper on “Securing the Competitiveness of the European Automotive Industry”. This is an important step taken by the European conservatives, who want to boost Europe’s ailing automotive sector by reversing the EU’s 2035 Internal Combustion Engine (#ICE) vehicles. This initiative demonstrates a clear commitment to technology neutrality and safeguarding the competitiveness of EU industries. The EPP’s paper also calls for the recognition of #renewablefuels, such as #efuels and #biofuels, which can run on ICE vehicles, offering a pragmatic solution that combines emissions reduction while leaving the choice to consumers on the technology they want to use. As discussions move forward, it is crucial that we recognise that together with other low-carbon technologies, ICEs fuelled by renewable fuels can contribute to achieving #Europe’s climate goals. • The EU’s path to #climateneutrality is at a crossroads. EU policies overwhelmingly favour electrification, overlooking other viable solutions like renewable and low-carbon fuels. This one-size-fits-all approach limits innovation, reduces consumer choice, and undermines Europe’s competitiveness — slowing down the very #decarbonisation we urgently need. In an op-ed for POLITICO Europe, FuelsEurope's Director General Liana Gouta highlights the need for embracing all carbon reduction technologies — including #renewablefuels — to accelerate decarbonisation and provide affordable, sustainable solutions for all Europeans. 🔑 Key takeaways: - Renewable fuels can decarbonise the existing vehicle fleet today, supporting a just transition and reducing emissions faster without additional costs for consumers or infrastructure. - An inclusive policy framework will boost innovation, maintain competitiveness, and safeguard jobs. - Renewable fuels in road transport will not be in competition with aviation and maritime. It will foster cost reductions through market growth and scaled-up production. - Electrification and renewable fuels are complementary, not competing solutions. It's time for urgent action grounded in science and real-world assessments to ensure an efficient, inclusive transition toward climate neutrality. • We work alongside key industry partners as part of the Network for Sustainable Mobility to address critical challenges for the European transport sector. In a joint letter to the European Commissioner for Sustainable Transport and Tourism, Mr. Apostolos Tzitzikostas, we expressed our concerns regarding shifting the Greening of Corporate Fleets initiative into a legislative proposal. While we fully support the EU’s goal of fleet decarbonisation, we believe that #technologyneutrality and market-driven principles are essential to achieving this goal sustainably and effectively. Moreover, “BEV purchase mandates targets for corporate fleets will create market distortions and bring with it a multitude of unintended consequences. In particular, we fear that targets could artificially inflate or maintain high prices of BEVs. Mandates do nothing to address customer demand. Forcing fleet operators to buy expensive vehicles that they can neither sell nor lease to customers is financially harmful, and will further exacerbate the already damaging effects of the collapse in residual values of EVs throughout Europe”, we express in the letter. Instead, we urge the European Commission to adopt a holistic mix of proven policies and incentives that include: · Swift development of recharging and refuelling infrastructure. · The development of a framework for the upgrade of the EU electricity grid, as well as developing a robust EU industrial action plan for the automotive sector. · Fiscal incentives to increase affordability and accessibility for all #zeroemissions vehicle technologies, including the combustion of #renewable and low-carbon fuels (both e-fuels and sustainable #biofuels). Together, we call for pragmatic, technology-inclusive measures that accelerate fleet #decarbonisation while safeguarding economic growth, European jobs, and transport resilience. • 📣 The Working Group on Monitoring Methodologies #WGMM, composed of more than 50 members across the #fuel and #automobile value chain, officially published  its key report on the « Monitoring the use of CO2 neutral fuels in road transport - a cross-sectoral industry assessment » to the European Commission after more than a year of work. 📃 This report presents and analyses 11 technological options to prove the exclusive use of #RenewableFuels in new road vehicles, and proposes innovative solutions to ensure a sustainable tracking and verification of the fuels. These solutions include digital tracking systems, chemical marking with physical identification of renewable fuels throughout the supply chain, on-board vehicle detection and physical security of fuel connections as well as mass balancing. 💧 The report also proposes a new definition for carbon-neutral fuels which covers all renewable fuels, including #eFuels and #biofuels, compliant with the sustainability criteria set in the Renewable Energy Directive #RED. “The grand coalition, representing the automotive and fuel value chains, which contributed to this report shows the willingness of #industry to contribute, together with the institutions, to the recognition of CO2 neutral fuels as an enabler for new #ICE and hybrid vehicles to be labelled zero-emission”, explains #FuelsEurope’s Communication Director Alain Mathuren about the work conducted within the working group. During the official presentation of the report to the press on Wednesday, MEP Prof. Dr. Andrea Wechsler from the EPP Group in the European Parliament, Luis Cabra, Deputy CEO of Repsol, and Dr. Michael Krüger, Senior Vice President and Head of Powertrain Development at Bosch participated in a panel discussion on the possible roles of CO2-neutral fuels in road transport. In this session, the panellists highlighted the need for technology neutrality in policy-making, as well as the role that renewable fuels can play in decarbonising road transport, which should both benefit citizens and companies. 🤝 The results of the report provide an opportunity to expand on its conclusions and draw up a joint roadmap for the energy transition in transport. • The momentum for a balanced approach to decarbonising transport is growing. Italy, now with Austria, Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Poland, Romania, and Slovakia, has called for an earlier review of the EU’s regulation ending the sale of new CO2-emitting cars from 2035, as POLITICO Europe reports. This push emphasises technological neutrality: a principle at the core of FuelsEurope’s efforts. There is a future for the internal combustion engine #ICE and that is through the use of renewable fuels, such as biofuels and e-fuels. Biofuels and e-fuels are pivotal in achieving carbon neutrality. They offer a sustainable path forward for the millions of internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles that are still on European roads and that will continue to be on the roads for the years to come. By enabling decarbonisation without requiring changes to existing infrastructure, these renewable fuels provide citizens with an effective and practical solution to reduce emissions. As the new European Commission has taken office, this is an opportunity to embrace a path that highlights innovation, technology neutrality and accelerates the EU’s decarbonisation goals without leaving industries or consumers behind. At FuelsEurope, we will continue saying: change the fuel, not the car. Let’s ensure the transition to carbon neutrality is fair, effective, and inclusive.
