We’re grateful for the opportunity to meet with European Commission Executive Vice-President for Prosperity and Industrial Strategy, Stéphane Séjournéé, at the very beginning of his mandate. Together with Italian Ministry of Enterprises and Made in Italy Adolfo Urso, MEP Massimiliano Salini, MEP Letizia Moratti, Raffaele Cattaneo of Regione Lombardia we discussed how European policy can strengthen the business case for investments in Europe. Hosted by Cefic President Ilham Kadri at Syensqo's cutting-edge Bollate site, alongside a delegation of Italian representatives, the meeting highlighted the challenges facing industry today and emphasised three urgent priorities for securing Europe’s industrial future. ⚡Affordable electricity to keep energy-intensive sectors competitive. 📜Streamlined regulations to foster innovation and simplify growth frameworks. 📈A robust market for sustainable products to help Europe lead the global green transition. The Antwerp Declaration, supported by 1,200+ organisations, offers a roadmap for this vision. However, all pathways share a common reliance on increasing the use of biomass, recycled materials, and low-emission energy. ⚙️ Technology Neutrality: By keeping all options on the table—biomass, low-emission hydrogen, and CCS—the industry can achieve climate neutrality at minimal cost to society. 🛠️ The Role of Enablers: From scaling up recycling rates to ensuring access to low-emission hydrogen, affordable energy, and sustainable biomass, a range of enablers is essential to achieve these goals.   Challenges Ahead: ♻️Only 9% of global plastic waste is recycled—integrating chemical and mechanical recycling is crucial. 🌱 Biomass is a gamechanger but must be sourced sustainably to avoid unintended impacts. 💡 Low-emission hydrogen, affordable energy, and robust CCS policies are critical to enabling a resilient, low-carbon future.
