Decentralized RAN for Telecom Networks Telefonica and Nova Labs launched Helium Mobile Hotspots in Mexico. The Helium network is an open-sourced, decentralized network owned and operated by the people. Helium Mobile relies on a network of Mobile Hotspots. These hotspots are like “mini cell towers” deployed by subscribers. Anyone can participate in creating mobile coverage where it’s needed the most. When others connect to these hotspots, the hotspot owners earn MOBILE tokens. I think this concept will have its hype but then it will lose its attraction among the masses. For places where installing a mobile tower/cell is not financially viable for mobile operators, this concept will bring much needed connectivity and the people suffering from bad coverage will continue using it. But many will treat it as a business opportunity (free mobile service). For them, more subscribers mean more tokens so they will install the hotspots in already crowded areas and will eventually be competing for more subscribers to latch to their hotspots to sustain their hotspots. With more coverage and fewer subscribers, the hotspots won't be sustainable. Another aspect is the security of the subscribers. How well these hotspots will perform against cyber attacks, Man in the Middle (MitM) attacks? Usually, mobile towers are installed in a secure place. These hotspots will be installed by people in homes and surroundings, with complete physical access available. Lycamobile is asking the FCC and the US Department of Justice to intervene in its fight against T-Mobile. "T-Mobile's actions towards Lycamobile raise concerns of anticompetitive conduct," the #MVNO wrote in a new filing to the FCC. "The totality of T-Mobile's conduct points to an attempt to lessen competition in the MVNO space – consistent with [T-Mobile's] incentive and ability to do so," #Lycamobile told the FCC. "Ultimate consequence is less competitive discipline on market participants, leading to higher prices and/or lower quality for consumers." As Light Reading previously reported, the fight between Lycamobile and T-Mobile stretches back to 2022, when T-Mobile filed a lawsuit against Lycamobile. The fight between Lycamobile and T-Mobile accelerated dramatically in April 2024. That's when Lycamobile took its complaints against T-Mobile public in an effort to block T-Mobile's proposed $1.3 billion acquisition of Mint Mobile. However, Lycamobile's complaints against T-Mobile were filed well after the #FCC's comment deadline for T-Mobile's Mint Mobile transaction. The agency approved T-Mobile's purchase of Mint Mobile in late April, and T-Mobile closed the deal on May 1. 🌐𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐈𝐬 𝐏𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐦𝐚 𝐀𝐝𝐯𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐓𝐨𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐝𝐬 𝟓𝐆 𝐓𝐞𝐜𝐡𝐧𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐲? Panama has recently embarked on its journey toward 𝐟𝐢𝐟𝐭𝐡-𝐠𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 (𝟓𝐆) 𝐦𝐨𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐞 𝐭𝐞𝐜𝐡𝐧𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐲, marking a significant milestone for the country. During an event at the Megápolis Convention Center, which included industry leaders and local regulators, it was announced that Más Móvil Panamá of Cable & Wireless Panama has initiated a testing phase for its #5G network in the 3.5 GHz band. This 📶 spectrum has been temporarily provided free of charge by the Autoridad Nacional de los Servicios Públicos (ASEP). Rocio Lorenzo, CEO of Más Móvil Panamá, described this initiative as a pivotal development for #Panama, ushering in new possibilities and solutions for the country. She emphasized that the launch of these pilot projects not only reinforces +Móvil's commitment to Panama and its customers but also advances the transformation of network services through 𝐜𝐮𝐭𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠-𝐞𝐝𝐠𝐞 𝐭𝐞𝐜𝐡𝐧𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐲. ASEP's general manager, Armando Fuentes Rodríguez, highlighted the government's support for developing 𝟓𝐆 𝐭𝐞𝐜𝐡𝐧𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐲 𝐢𝐧 𝐏𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐦𝐚.
