Skylo to launch mobile to satellite service with MVNOs in Brazil next year At the Latin American Satellite Congress, in Rio de Janeiro yesterday, Skylo announced it would launch its Satellite direct-to-device (#D2D) in Brazil next year. The company has developed a technology that allows direct connection between smartphones with chipsets compatible with 3GPP release 17 and geostationary satellites that are already in orbit using the L or S bands. In Brazil, Skylo has a partnership with Viasat to use its satellites, and the authorization from Anatel to use the L band. In addition, Hugh Stevenson, Skylo's Business Development Director, revealed that Skylo has already reached partnerships with three mobile virtual network operators (#MVNO) to launch the service with an initial focus on the Internet of Things (#IoT) solutions market. Unlike Starlink or Kuiper, Skylo's service is not broadband, but narrowband. The idea is to serve for emergency communication, such as sending or receiving text messages, or sending location information; or for data traffic from IoT applications. The three main use cases are: 1) SOS service for the end consumer; 2) vehicle monitoring and telemetry; 3) IoT in heavy machinery located in remote areas. Latency ranges from 5 to 15 seconds. Since it uses the L and S satellite bands, Skylo does not depend on agreements with mobile operators. According to its director, the technology is agnostic to the type of satellite, and may also operate with those in low and medium orbits in the future. Its biggest challenge, however, is the lack of devices compatible with release 17. For now, the technology is restricted to top-of-the-line smartphones. In the US, Google's new Pixel models have the service. "Skylo's innovation is to take advantage of geostationary satellites," said Stevenson. The company already has partnerships for coverage and operations in more than 40 countries. TIP Brasil has 160 MVNOs in its portfolio and a strategy based on a board game   Henrique Medeiros, from Mobile Time meet up with Carlos Eduardo Rattis, Head of MVNO at TIP Brasil, during the Abrint National Meeting event, to hear more about the company and its strategy. TIP was launched in 2010 by Alexandre Alves, as a fixed-line operator but has since then added a series of services such as virtual PBX, pay TV and it also launched a mobile virtual network operator (#MVNO). About a year ago, the company expanded its MVNO offer to internet providers (#ISP), with #5G network in white label mode, and the possibility of using an eSIM or physical SIM card, as well as access to Business Intelligence (BI) and analytics to ensure the formulation of customized plans for voice, SMS and data. Today, TIP Brasil has 160 virtual mobile operators in its portfolio. In addition, the company also has eight #privatenetworks that operate in the 700 MHz band, approved by the regulator Anatel, but only for data. The SIM cards works for private and public networks. The partners plugged in to offer public network to MVNOs are the MVNA/MVNE Surf Telecom and Americanet (TIM network) and as of this week Telecall (Vivo network). TIP's strategy for ISPs to advance in mobile services is based on the economics-themed board game “Monopoly”. Just like in the board game, the player buys land and grows his income with houses and hotels. In the telecom world, TIP recommends that the ISP move forward with the MVNO model instead of moving forward with more fiber optics (and the costs associated with it), in a neighborhood and compete for customers with another ISP or even with large operators. “The ISP explored the interior of Brazil with Fixed Internet and now it’s starting to grow with the mobile network,” Rattis told Mobile Time. According to company data, average revenue per user (#ARPU) jumps from R$68 with fixed broadband to R$120 with mobile (on an account with three SIM cards per household). If you add the fixed plus mobile combo, the ARPU value reaches R$240. “They triple your average ticket”, he adds. Brazilian M2M MVNO Eseye, eyes Latin America expansion in 2025 The mobile virtual network operator (#MVNO) Eseye, wants to expand from Brazil to other Latin American countries in mid-2025. The #M2M #IoT MVNO has been focused on growing its business in the Brazilian market since 2016 but is now eyeing the expansion into other markets, as explained by Ana Carolina Bussab, general director of the company in Brazil to Mobiletime. “We have constant growth of 9% to 20% per year. So, we want to increase this growth, see what is possible and feasible within the Brazilian reality and then, at a comfortable level, dedicate ourselves with time and technology to expand to Latin America”. Founded in 2007 in the United Kingdom, Eseye offers connectivity services for companies that need connection for M2M and IoT operations with multiple operators. In Brazil, Eseye is an accredited MVNO and partner of the mobile virtual network aggregator (#MVNA) and enabler (#MVNE) Surf Telecom. Its local clients are utilities such as Equatorial, CPFL and Comgás, as well as supply chain, vehicle and cargo tracking companies. In total, the company has 700,000 active devices, but this number can vary up or down, due to the amount of "bait loads" (equipment disguised within the load that is used once and then discarded). Allcom Telecom has announced the launch of its mobile virtual network operator (#MVNO) in Brazil, using the network of Algar Telecom. The project foresees the offering of customized plans to serve businesses that use IoT, says Allcom The service should be available from the beginning of the third quarter this year throughout #Brazil. Allcom Telecom already reports a base of more than three million devices in the country in the #IoT and #M2M market, offering both connectivity management solutions and equipment for the segment (such as trackers, locators and PoS). 🇧🇷 Brazil Detection Capabilities of Operational Submarine Cables Since the discovery of the detection capabilities of operational submarine cables, a multitude of intelligent optical spectroscopic techniques have enabled the enhancement of cable security and environmental protection. The first monitoring network based on the DART network (Deep-ocean Assessment and Reporting of Tsunamis - https://lnkd.in/dXAyuRCr), the industry has sought to improve and have synergy between cable owners and government institutions to improve the safety of coastal communities. This week, we are taking an important and big step in Brazil together with government bodies interest groups, and the Brazilian submarine cable industry on this topic, and as awareness of the importance and complexity of the oceanic environment of our Amazonia Azul becomes increasingly more clear, the need for better detection, with better spatial resolution and greater temporal coverage, is now becoming necessary and we see that submarine cables developed to transmit information between continents can be used as sensors. Detection with submarine cables is something new and we are seeking to understand, absorb, and have the capacity to implement this technology in our territorial sea. I) Technological advances based on DAS (Distributed Acoustic Sensing), DTS (Distributed Temperature Sensor), and FOS (Fiber Optic Sensing). II)Technological advances on the high seas for cable safety and environmental protection. Applicability and potential of optical tools. III) Coastal communities and coastal sensing, including territorial waters and EEZ up to 200 nautical miles under Brazilian jurisdiction IV) Legal interpretation of optical sensing in coastal areas and high seas within the scope of UNCLOS and BBNJ (The High Seas Treaty frame) and their structures. The Brazilian communications minister announced its support for the idea of creating a fund to expand connectivity in Brazil, with contributions coming from big techs. This has the same effect as cold shower for the Brazilian telcos that have been pushing for "fair share" in the country. In the end, the debate about “fair share” risks degenerating into a situation that makes telcos and big techs worse off than before. Big techs pay fees to access the network, operators do not receive resources to invest in their infrastructure, and the government creates another fund that will not be used for its intended purpose. My comment about it below.

First, it maps the field to identify how it has evolved throughout the years. Next, it draws on 30 official statements published by journalists and their tech partners, and seven semi-structured interviews with representatives from five websites. This article shows an emerging automation landscape in the Brazilian fact-checking venture supported by the tech industry.
