This is insane. With Meta glasses you can search for anyone in real life, in real time.
The video shows a student recognizing people as if they're old friends.
👉 The glasses detect someone.
👉 Then they use the photo to find them online.
👉 It pulls personal data like home address or where they want to school.
It can even find articles you've written or voter registration.
The student uses this to say hello to people using this information.
It feels uncanny and like the person knows you.
This will make IRL social engineering much simpler.
(and I can imagine some college kids using it as a weird pick up technique).
What happens when your face gives away all of your data?
I'd love to see Meta, Google and others start to bake in protections from this kind of scraping. They're going to be more and more critical in the next decade.
Are you seeing this in your day job?
At Sardine our clients already tell use deep fake masking attacks are spiking in markets like Brazil and the USA.
We can detect these. And we're always building for what's coming.

Meta Facebook
This, should be forbidden, you can not just walk up to people and confront them with extremely personal details, right in the middle of the open public area's.
There is such thing as "privacy" that should be respected, at all time.
Because:
Recording with camera on a phone (visible recording), or
just look thru a pair of glasses (none visible recording)
is really, not the same thing.

This is why I have never shared pictures of my kids on social media. We freely share sensitive information without the slightest idea what it will and can be used for in the future.

Whether you have a professional interest in AI/genAI or a personal concern around privacy/data use, this video is worth watching. Thanks to Simon Taylor for sharing it 2 weeks ago. The NY Times piece in today's paper provides more insight on the students who produced it (link to the article is below).

Doxed by Meta! The next headline. 🤯This new product raises alarming concerns about individual privacy and the potential for abuse. The ability of Meta glasses to identify and gather personal information about individuals in real-time is not just a technological advancement—it's a significant invasion of privacy.
Imagine walking down the street, and a stranger can access your home address, educational background, or even your published articles simply by looking at you.
Such capabilities create a chilling environment where social interactions are underpinned by surveillance rather than genuine connection. This technology could easily be exploited for social engineering, making it simpler for malicious actors to manipulate or deceive individuals. The idea that college students might use this as a pick-up technique underscores just how invasive and unsettling this reality could become.
As we navigate this new landscape, it’s crucial for tech giants like Meta and Google to implement robust protections against data scraping. The need for privacy safeguards will only grow as these technologies evolve.
In summary, while advancements in technology can offer convenience, they also pose significant risks to individual privacy. It’s crucial for society to engage in discussions about these technologies, advocate for responsible practices, and implement measures to protect personal data.
At Profila we are committed to creating a safe space for individuals to share their data in exchange for value, empowering users to take control of their information while ensuring their privacy is respected. By fostering transparency and trust, we aim to redefine the relationship between individuals and their data in the digital age.

This is not only dystopian -- it is downright dangerous -- it allows a violent person to recognize someone as of opposite political party, or school of thought and can get rather dangerous. Such glasses should be either banned or their features must be controlled through regulatory mechanisms so that PII information even if available via OSINT should not be so easily in the fingertips of others. Of course, removing PII information from social media as much as possible via 'right-to-be-forgotten' could be an option but in most countries that provision is loosely implemented by the social media and other online platforms.
