5G NSA vs. SA: What's the Difference? 5G NSA (Non-Standalone): Most initial 5G rollouts are NSA, which means they leverage existing 4G infrastructure. This allows for faster deployment but limits some of the advanced features that true 5G promises. 5G SA (Standalone): SA uses a brand-new 5G core, enabling ultra-low latency, better reliability, and features like network slicing. It is critical for applications such as smart cities, autonomous vehicles, and industrial IoT. Globally, 5G NSA is still more widespread as it offers a cost-effective way to launch 5G quickly. However, countries like China and South Korea are leading the charge with 5G SA deployments, unlocking the full potential of 5G for innovative use cases. Why It Matters: NSA is a great stepping stone, but SA is where the magic happens: from autonomous cars to advanced healthcare applications. The transition from NSA to SA is picking up speed as the infrastructure matures. Using NSA costs your UE more power ?? Why ! In terms of user equipment (UE) energy consumption, 5G NSA typically consumes more energy compared to 5G SA.
