What are the best practices for public and media relations?
Media relations best practices are rooted in great storytelling and having deep knowledge of the media landscape. To excel, you must be reading media coverage every single day. Relying on archaic tactics like press releases and “news jacking” will only get you so far. The most successful efforts uncover compelling stories (often found in the minutiae and not in blatant promotion) and mold them to fit with specific coverage. It’s not about just pitching The New York Times or Wall Street Journal, but knowing that a specific newsletter, column, segment or podcast is the best venue for telling a particular story.

What are some innovative ways to increase brand awareness on a budget?
Short term PR projects are a cost effective way to generate brand awareness. We've worked with startups on a budget to maximize ROI from a publicity campaign in as little as 8 weeks. This approach requires aligning timing and stories for maximum effect. Building a campaign around a corporate news item is an effective way to achieve this. Beyond just an announcement, it's an opportunity to develop tangential storylines that can open up additional opportunities for audience engagement. For example, if you are announcing a funding round, you can develop different angles such as executive features or industry insight to expand media engagement beyond just a press release. This increases frequency in coverage, which can boost brand awareness.

What do you do if your strategic thinking in Public Relations is not yielding results?
Achieving success in PR demands grit. Often, strategies might not work as expected due to factors beyond control, like changing news cycles. Flexibility and the capacity to adjust tactics are key. It's usually the execution, not the strategy, needing change. For instance, if publicity efforts fail, the issue might lie in the communication method. A press release, typically yielding modest outcomes, could be replaced with alternative storytelling methods, such as using company data or highlighting executive profiles, to garner attention. Adaptability and refining communication strategies are critical to achieving better results.
