🚀 Mission Mondays: Cultivating Impact 🌱
In the landscape of business, missions aren't mere marketing ploys; they're the guiding stars steering organisations towards their greater purpose.
Consider this analogy: just as a farmer tends to a crop, each with its unique purpose—whether it's for nourishment, sustainability, profits, feeding the hungry, or community growth—impact business missions should align with the broader purpose, (beyond just profit growth), compounding every systemic decision in line with the particular purpose-led behaviour and resulting action.
A farmer with a purpose of nutrition over profit results in an entirely different farming practice - yet both can be profitable. The same is true for “impact” brands.
The challenge arises when founders of "For Impact" ventures craft noble missions to make a positive dent in the universe within conventional (for profit) business structures, acting on for-profit advice and partnering within “profit at all costs” networks.
The problem within conventional models, profit remains a siloed collective goal (purpose), and positive impact takes a back seat. Gradually diluted over time Impact Founders find their purpose lost to profit alone.
To cultivate genuine change, the mission must intertwine seamlessly with the organisation's definition of purpose. It's about reimagining governance, financing, ownership, and partnerships—planting seeds of transformation beyond traditional norms and creating the perimeters for new styles of organisational culture and strategy. Mission-Lock, as it's called, is the systems science required to do so.
Remember, if your organisational blueprint mirrors outdated models, your impact-driven mission WILL wither under the weight of profit-centric approaches. Don't get me wrong, profit may still be a key component, but it's time to break ground, get creative with your model, and aim towards a new definition of success in terms of your impact / positive transformation.
You can't address today's challenges with yesterday's methods. Let's nurture purpose-driven business models for a greener, more equitable future.
