Our latest CNBC deep dive looked at Elon Musk's relationship with President-elect Donald Trump and how Musk's new role as head of the Department of Government Efficiency, or DOGE, may benefit his vast empire. As head of DOGE, Elon Musk has promised to slash $2 trillion from the federal budget. One way he's suggested doing this is by consolidating some of the country's over 400 federal agencies, many of which regulate his companies including SpaceX and Tesla. Thanks to CNBC's own Lora Kolodny and Steve Kovach for your expertise. https://lnkd.in/exjUXjfn

"No CEO has ever bet so big on a commander-in-chief - and won." I know there'll be many still reeling from yesterday's election result, and most people are probably sick of the tsunami of opinions voiced, but I was pondering on my dog walk earlier what an astonishing coup Elon Musk has pulled off. Without doubt he's a genius...we're just a bit concerned he might be an evil one. Both The Economist and TechCrunch have today published excellent pieces on what the Trump victory might mean for Musk and his businesses. Links are in comments - they're well worth a read. There was an immediate impact yesterday, when Tesla's share price jumped 15%, adding some $15bn to Musk's personal wealth (it's still going up today). The prospect of huge tariffs dampening demand for your major competitors will do that... As The Economist points out, Musk "has come as close to the levers of presidential power as any serving CEO in American history" and TechCrunch believes that he "is now poised to be the incoming president’s most influential political and business adviser." He's going to have unprecedented influence over regulation (or, more likely the removal, halting, or reduction of regulation) that will directly impact his own businesses. Conflict of interests, much? Both pieces highlight numerous areas where Musk's businesses could benefit, from SpaceX (more lucrative US government contracts), to X (a possible merger with Trump's Truth Social), to xAI (light AI regulation to maintain an advantage over Chinese AI development) and beyond. Though The Economist admits that there's a chance Musk might be "a breath of fresh air", this paragraph caught my eye: "The merger of unrivalled power and wealth between two unashamed egomaniacs with boundless self-regard and scant respect for rules and regulations could go badly wrong - if they don’t end up hating each other first." We watch with interest (from behind the sofa).

#politicsUSA #governmentUSA2025 #elonmusk #donaldtrump #newyorktimes 'AT THE HEART OF CORRUPTION' - NEW YORK TIMES' REPORTS - MUSK and the TESLA issues - Rarely do I do this, but I feel compelled to create as much attention for this as possible, since it *explains the sudden change of political interests in someone like Elon Musk* around 3 or 4 years ago, corruption being at the bottom of it. Quote from the NEW YORK TIMES article below: "His [Musk's] entanglements with federal regulators are also numerous and adversarial. His companies have been targeted in at least 20 recent investigations or reviews, including over the safety of his Tesla cars and the environmental damage caused by his rockets." It has turned out that development flaws in the Tesla autonomous driving models might lead to the return of government funding on a huge scale... (or would have...) President-elect Donald Trump will give Elon Musk a major role in the reduction of government spending and minimization of overall bureaucracy. I do not know what to think about this right now... What could this mean for the European Union? Together with Vivek Ramaswamy, Musk will lead the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). Trump even labeled this a modern "Manhattan Project". What if this works? The United States of America already plays a leading role in high tech. This includes but is not limited to Artificial Intelligence. Would DOGE increase the US's already significant economic location advantage? To say that the EU is struggling with high-tech would be an understatement. Overshadowing bureaucracy, over-regulation, and of course, over-spending are issues on our continent as well, significantly slowing down innovation and progress. What do you think about this development?

"The billionaire’s influence continues after the election, with him joining Trump during a call with Volodymyr Zelenskyy, president of Ukraine, on Wednesday to discuss the war there. Now Musk is preparing to wield new power in Washington having been promised a wide remit as head of a new Department of Government Efficiency. "He has spoken of slashing $2tn from the US budget and firing hundreds of thousands from a “vast bureaucracy”, while eliminating regulations he blames for stifling innovation. "Musk’s advisory role will be structured to ensure he keeps control of companies such as Tesla, X, SpaceX, xAI and Neuralink, said people familiar with the preparations. Instead, he aims to exert power by installing longtime deputies, engineering experts, financial backers and ideological partners at government agencies. This is that time.” "The billionaire has leaned on a few trusted advisers to oversee his portfolio of companies, tasking them with executing brutal lay-offs, abrupt changes in strategy and meeting seemingly impossible deadlines. "For corporate restructuring, Musk has often relied on Steve Davis, president of the Musk-owned tunnelling start-up The Boring Company. "Parachuted into Twitter after the turbulent $44bn acquisition in 2022, Davis slept at the social media group’s San Francisco headquarters with his wife and newborn child while overseeing a “transition team” that ultimately slashed 80 per cent of jobs. “[Davis] is good at firing people,” said one person who knows both men. Elon Musk's rising influence in the Trump administration has sparked concerns about potential conflicts of interest as he navigates rivalries with other tech giants. ⚔ Known for his competitive nature, Musk has previously clashed with figures like Mark Zuckerberg and Jeff Bezos. 💰 With his significant financial backing of Trump (over $250 million) Musk is now positioned to leverage government power to benefit his companies, particularly SpaceX and Tesla, while possibly undermining competitors. 🧐 Experts warn that Musk could initiate or halt government investigations and influence regulatory frameworks to favor his interests. 👏 While Musk advocates for deregulation and efficiency, some believe his actions could inadvertently benefit rivals by promoting a healthier competitive landscape. 👍 Despite these concerns, both Bezos and OpenAI's Sam Altman expressed confidence that Musk would not misuse his political influence against competitors. As Musk takes on a leadership role in the newly formed Department of Government Efficiency, the implications of his influence on U.S. policy and technology regulation remain to be seen. ❓ What do you think? Musk + Trump: The Dynamic Duo America Didn't Know It Needed (Or Deserved) In a crossover event no one saw coming but everyone should have, Elon Musk and Donald Trump have joined forces like a tech-politics version of Batman and Robin—if Robin was worth $400 billion and Batman moonlit as a Mar-a-Lago event planner. Musk recently declared a “mandate for revolution” at a Trump donor soirée, apparently mistaking America’s election results for a SpaceX mission briefing. Both men now share remarkably similar favorability ratings, which is either a branding win for Musk or a sobering reality check for Trump. Experts are split on whether this odd couple is a boon or bust for Musk’s empire of electric cars, brain implants, and questionably safe trucks—or for Trump’s political aspirations. After all, having the world's richest man on your speed dial can only help when gutting federal agencies or handing out shiny new tariffs to annoy China. Of course, investors like Ross Gerber are torn. On one hand, Musk’s political side gig might boost Tesla’s bottom line with friendlier policies. On the other, Gerber isn’t thrilled about self-driving Cybertrucks that are as reliable as Musk’s tweets. But hey, “I’ve made a lot of money with Elon,” he shrugs, summing up the ethos of late-stage capitalism in one sentence. Meanwhile, analysts predict Tesla, xAI, and SpaceX could soar under Musk’s newfound influence, though some wonder if America’s government is becoming Musk’s seventh startup. As one biographer puts it, Musk is a “unicorn,” meaning no one can decide whether he’s a mythical blessing or a corporate tax loophole in human form. This article was written by an AI because humanity is now outsourcing existential dread to chatbots. https://lnkd.in/ghB25F9n

Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy said the government efficiency panel that President-elect Donald Trump has named them to lead will follow recent U.S. Supreme Court rulings that they say can be used to take power away from federal agencies and reduce regulations the two call unnecessary, costly and inefficient. Musk, the billionaire CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, and Ramaswamy, a former Republican presidential candidate and the founder of biotech firm Roivant Sciences, will head a panel of outside advisers to make recommendations concerning the federal government. They want to greatly reduce the size of the federal workforce and to wipe away many existing regulations. Given the ambitious claims made by Musk, Ramaswamy and Trump about the panel's ability to transform the U.S. government, the effort has received widespread publicity and interest in how it will operate. The two wrote a Wall Street Journal opinion piece about the panel on Nov. 20. They said their bid to pull the plug on existing regulations will be guided by a pair of recent U.S. Supreme court rulings that limited the authority of federal regulatory agencies. I hope that Elon Musk is just making promises and exaggerations that he knows he can't keep, just to get attention. Cutting fat from the government is imperative. However, "fast" in terms of government spending, and more importantly, the economy, must be done in a metered and logical way. It must be articulated to the public in a way that elicits confidence, where whatever will be suggested by D.O.G.E. will earn confidence from the public. The success or failure of the economy is predominantly based the public's perception of the economy. D.O.G.E. must show competence; not ignorance. It must show the public a deliberate and methodical plan; not arrogance and short-sidedness. https://lnkd.in/e2VwpH7z #DOGE
