It's been a long, weird, often bad, sometimes good year. I'm taking some time off of work the next several weeks. I'll be back around the holidays to get my ducks in a row for CES. Take care of yourselves.
😃 We asked Michael Cowles what his absolute favorite part of OVcare is, and his answer was simple: the convenience. 🙌
👉 For Michael, it’s all about being able to do recordings whenever and wherever he needs to. Whether he’s on-site or out and about, he can keep everything updated in real-time, without any hassle. 📲💨
But it’s not just about flexibility. Michael loves having access to a wealth of information at his fingertips. With OVcare, he can quickly pull up the details he needs, saving loads of time and helping him see the bigger picture of what’s going on. 🧩🕵️♂️
Why Michael loves OVcare’s convenience:
🔹 Record on the Go: No need to be tied to a desk—keep things updated no matter where you are! 🚶♂️
🔹 Access to Information: Instantly find what you need and connect the dots, making everything clearer and more manageable. 🔗
Michael’s feedback is a reminder that the right tools make all the difference. Want to see how OVcare can make your work life easier, too? Let’s chat! 👇

“How on earth am I supposed to keep my numbers up when these kids keep getting SICK?” 👶🏻👧🏻
One of the many questions I asked Chloë Lowe - likely through tears - in my early Kforce Inc days. The biggest perk of work travel is face time with friends across the country who you’d rarely have a chance to see otherwise, and when yesterday brought me to San Diego (on my birthday!), I jumped at the chance to call this woman. Chloe was my lifeline for so many years.
📈 In our search and staffing world, the President’s Club top 10 list was mostly men. Chloe and I were equally ambitious - we never questioned that we’d be on those lists and attending those killer incentive trips!
📈 But we also had kids around the same time (early 2010s). Our husbands also have careers that demanded their time. So from coast to coast… we leaned on each other. We knew we’d need to check in with each other to help navigate trying to be good moms AND crush the recruiting and sales game.
📈 There were a few years that we both had toddlers and a newborns at our ankles, and sometimes we wonder how we got through THAT. 🤣 We did, and we stayed on those lists, and it wasn’t easy… but it was always together and in community. If I called, she answered.
Yesterday we got to catch up over the fact that our kids are all middle schoolers, and celebrate two decades since I entered that career that ended up spanning 14 years. I’m so grateful that this one is still in my life and in my corner.
C-Lowe, your friendship and mentorship during those early, hard years of working motherhood mean more than you’ll ever know. ❤️

1 YEAR OF EARLWORK!!!
If you're an avid Earlywork follower, this will be the 5th or 6th post today of its kind.
Today marks a year since 🕺Ben Horwitz started at Earlywork.
I have the pleasure of sitting next to this fella day-in day-out...what an experience it has been.
Right now he's trying to mash-up 'Remember the Name' and 'Lose yourself' as I write this post 🤣
There are two things that you need to know about Ben if you haven't met him already:
1️⃣ This guy lives and breathes Earlywork.
He has a limitless passion for careers and wants to help illuminate options so that people don't make the same mistakes he has in the past.
He knows how it feels to be lost in life, and he knows what it takes to find a workplace that feels like home. He just wants to help people make journey.
2️⃣ He's a joy to work with.
He's always there to give me advice when I do something... sub-optimal 👀
He's also open to advice for himself. In many ways we complement each other's weaknesses, and we always have a good laugh about the mistakes we make along the way.
Ben is one of those people who is obsessed with what he does. Unlike others who share this characteristic, this does not come from a place of selfishness, but the opposite. He's never satisfied knowing he can help one more person.
The amount of Fridays he spends late in the office, talking to people about careers is one of the most inspiring things I've seen.
He always makes me lift my game.
What a legend, hopefully it's just the start of the journey 🧡
Do you want to improve your company culture?
Here’s how you can:
- provide flexible working options and allow people to work in a way that works for them
Thats it.
There’s no need to over complicate it.
And there’s no need to spend money on pizzas and beers.
Honestly, I think peolple want better than this.
Flexible working is needed by many.
company culture is all about how people feel.
For me, I’ve a few roles in my life so I need flexibility.
I’m a Dad, stepdad, unpaid carer.
Sometimes days can get so hectic that I need to be in three places at one time.
But it doesn’t mean I can’t work and produce results.
I need the flexibility to be able to be at my best each day.
I need the flexibility to be able to find time to recharge my batteries.
I need to be a success at home and with my work.
I believe I can have success at both and should never have to pick one or the other.
If you’re not providing flexible working options to your employees…
You and your company are completely out of touch with the modern working family and the people who need proper flexibility.
Ps. We have a big 8th birthday to celebrate today for our Zoey 🥳
I couldn’t be more proud that I get to be stepdad to these children. Success to me is that they are getting older and still want to spend time with me.
I was off Friday and Monday was Memorial Day here in the US, which meant an extra long weekend and short work week. I don’t know about you, but coming back to work after time away is always a struggle for me.
Here‘s what I did to ease back in and make the most out of this short week:
🗓️ Prioritized Tasks: I checked in and reorganized my to-do list in ClickUp. A clear to-do list and organized schedule helped make everything feel more manageable.
💻 Caught Up with the Team: It felt a bit jarring to go from a long weekend surrounded by people and festivities to isolating myself in my home office. I took some time to sync with my team via Slack. I followed up on some tasks and asked about their Memorial Day weekend. Even a few messages back and forth helped me feel less alone and more connected to my team.
✅ Started Small: Rather than jumping right back into big projects, I started with some smaller, more repetitive tasks to get back into “work mode.” Checking a few things off my list right away gave me a sense of accomplishment.
🍝 Made After Work Plans: When I started to hit a slump, I called my parents and invited them over for dinner. Setting some evening plans gave me something to look forward to and gave me motivation to finish my work.
I hope this week is a productive and happy one for you, friends. Let’s finish out the month on a high note. I’m rooting for you! 🙌🏻

✨🎬 Behind the Scenes: OOO FOMO? 🎬✨
I’m Back!!
I was unexpectedly out of circulation. I thought it would be a few days out of the office. I set my out of office (OOO) and cleaned my desk.
But sometimes life doesn’t go as planned. Some things are outside our control.
I knew the team was on a great path and - like always - they would rise to the occasion if a crisis occurred.
They allowed me to focus on getting healthy. Which I did until the day before I returned. Then it felt like my nerves factory reset to the first day of school/work. It wasn’t exactly FOMO (fear of what I missed out on) or first day jitters. It was something I did *not* enjoy feeling.
When I got back, it was clear I had dropped sync. I felt like I was out of the loop, racing to catch up. I was fine and ready to be there. But I needed time to get back into the swing of things. Coming back after sick leave is not the same as returning after a vacation. I was not well rested and revitalized from time away. I was not raring to go and hitting the ground running. I needed time to warm up. But as a leader, I am visible on my good days and my not-as-good-as-planned days.
This experience reminds me:
1) WE all have a backstory, even if not publicly told SO
2) assume noble intent, most are trying to do the right thing, AND
3) act with grace, defined as courteous goodwill, BECAUSE
4) strong teams will rise to any challenge
Thanks for joining me on this journey. 💖

Today we had a lunch & learn on deep work. This was the outcome!
Since switching to a 4-day work week last year, we’ve aimed to do daily deep work sessions, but we knew there was room for improvement. So today, we brainstormed solutions to our common distractions.
Unsurprisingly, our phones were a common distraction. Working in social media, this is a challenge we all face. Research shows that even having your phone nearby can drain cognitive resources. So, during our deep work sessions, we're sentencing our phones to jail. ❌
Here are a few things we are also taking away from the session:
💡 Batch your day into deep and shallow work sessions and take regular breaks
💡 Try early morning deep work sessions before checking emails
💡 Close all unnecessary tabs, log out of emails and send your phone to jail
💡 Let colleagues know you're going deep so they leave you alone to focus
Would you love to send your phone to jail?
Thinking about when to switch from your first job?
Just remember, it's like deciding when to break up with your first love - when the cons start outweighing the pros, it's time to move on!

6 hours of work. 4 hours of play.
That’s how my days go now, but it wasn't always like this.
When I started consulting, it was all about the hustle:
Long hours, endless calls, chasing every opportunity.
But then I realised something.
No client, no project, no deadline will ever matter more than the little ones sitting across the dinner table.
Now?
- Evenings are for family.
- Phones go off at playtime.
- Work waits until bedtime.
Because let’s face it:
Kids don’t care about the emails you send.
They want your time and attention.
How about you?
How do you balance work and family?
