In our ongoing series on the European Championship 2024 we look at similarities and differences of the countries playing. ⚽🌎
Croatia and Spain share a Mediterranean way of life, rich culinary traditions and breathtaking coastal landscapes. Yet they differ in their language, history and local customs.
Spain 🇪🇸:
Flamenco: This passionate dance and music style originated in Andalusia and is known worldwide. Flamenco includes singing, dancing and guitar music and is an important part of Spanish culture in southern regions of the country. 💃
Siesta: In Spain, the siesta, an afternoon nap, is an old tradition. Some shops, particularly in smaller towns and rural areas, still close for a few hours in the afternoon to maintain this tradition of rest. 😴
Olives: Spanish streets are often lined with olive trees, and each year the country produces around 1.5 million tons of olives, more than any other nation in the world. 🍸
Croatia:
Island paradise: Croatia has over 1,000 islands, of which only about 50 are inhabited. The most famous islands are Hvar, Brač and Korčula, which are known for their beautiful beaches and crystal-clear waters. 🏝️
Inventor of ties: Croatia is considered the country of origin of the necktie. In the 17th century Croatian soldiers wore colorful scarves around their necks, which were called ‘cravats’ by French soldiers. 👔
Coffee time: Croatia has a strong café culture. Croatians sit in cafés for hours enjoying their coffee with family, friends or business partners while chatting, relaxing and enjoying each other’s company. ☕
