The Trade Desk reported another very strong quarter last night, outperforming the digital ad market as it has done every quarter for the last few years. As CEO Jeff Green pointed out in the earnings call, TTD is privileged to work with many of the world's leading marketers and agencies in helping them make the most of every advertising dollar. Today’s commentary from Digiday points to industry action accelerating around supply-side technology consolidation. “We’re probably looking at cutting out 60% of our partners,” said the head of programmatic on behalf of advertisers at a global agency who asked to remain anonymous due to the sensitive nature of the issue.  That’s around five of the dozen supply-side platforms (SSPs) the agency works with, continued the exec, who added, “they’re the ones we can really trust.” Last month, Jounce Media released their annual State of the Open Internet report. While this report is always a must-read for the industry, this version will prove to be one of the most consequential pieces of research for the industry in 2024, particularly the section on “Bid Congestion”. The supply-side consolidation theme (also referred to as SPO) has been an active conversation in the industry for years. Jounce’s latest research, among other recent events, have reignited much needed industry action around SSP consolidation. The high level technical conclusion of Jounce’s findings, can be summed up pretty concisely: “The solution to this problem is fat pipes. It would be far better for our hypothetical DSP to accept 1.5 million QPS from 2 SSPs than to accept 100,000 QPS from 30 SSPs.” Jounce notes that this is not only an improved model for most DSPs, but importantly, their end customers (agencies and brands) as well. Industry momentum behind supply-side consolidation is entering a new phase of meaningful action. Backed by a number of converging focal points, including sustainability, the industry is starting to break through the historical barriers holding back these important changes.

Anyone selling adtech/martech/data needs to remember: your prospects already have more of all that stuff than they can possibly manage. From the article: "AB InBev collects data from across more than 1,000 sources, including ecommerce, social and branded websites. It owns over 500 brands in 42 countries." AB InBev is a slightly extreme case, owning many of the world's largest consumer brands, but every company (at least the ones with any real budget to spend) has its own microcosm of this. The point is: the standalone value of your solution is not nearly as relevant as you might like, because no matter how performant it is, it's competing for finite mindshare and resources with literally thousands of other data sources, campaigns, channels, and technologies your client is already juggling. A few percentage points performance increase in one small corner of a client's digital marketing/advertising footprint often just doesn't matter very much. This is where it becomes CRITICALLY important to be able to zoom out on a client's business and understand all the ways your solution can add value and all the trade-offs and dependencies you need to help your client navigate. Every trade-off needs a rationale, and if you don't proactively help clients develop those rationales, they will just keep things status quo because it's a lot less work and a lot less risk. 👻 Nothing gets Adtechies in the spirit of Halloween more than Mark McEachran's recent AdExchanger piece. #RIPCookies Advertising is changing. External drivers such as major FAANG plans no longer overshadow internal sell side strategic initiatives. It turns out executing against roadmap priorities: ♻️ mitigates engineering waste 😨 eliminates scope creep 🎁 secures tangible deliverables 🙄 There is nothing more irritating than committing to a roadmap, but everything under the sun and outside of your control delaying it. We know Google's announcements derailed things more than once. Now that the embrace of Alt IDs is taking shape, its time to focus more on analytic attribution instead of inferred uplift. Answering the question of ROI was always the more important and interesting conversation anyways. That said, Mark does a great job explaining the shift and I'd recommend taking a read if you haven't gotten around to it yet.
