As recruiters, the first thing we look for in a new opening is "how do I sell this?" At IEX our pitch almost always starts with the important missions that our contracts support. Most of the positions we have here directly impact national security. Over the last couple weeks, a lot of us here in the Tampa Bay area have been reminded of another very important mission: getting power back after a storm. I really can't say enough good things about the linemen who dedicate their lives to ensure we can power our things. If you're looking for a meaningful profession, this is a great place to start. Average compensation: Entry Level: $50-60K Journeyman: $70-90K Senior: $100K+ Storm Duty: eligible for overtime pay, double pay, per diem/travel pay, standby pay, and bonuses $$$ How to become a lineman: 1. Apprenticeship Programs - generally 3-4 years and combine paid on-the-job training with classroom instruction. 💲 Associated Costs: These are typically paid positions. There will be costs for tools and equipment. Training is generally covered or considered part of compensation. 2. Technical School Programs - Trade or Technical school that typically last from a few months to a year. Additional apprenticeship is required after the school to gain more experience. 💲Associated Costs: Programs can range from $5,000 to $20,000 - also gear, tools, and books will run you from $1,500 to $5,000. For any transitioning veterans: GI Bill can cover many of the costs associated with becoming a lineman, from technical school programs to apprenticeships. Just be sure to confirm the school or apprenticeship is approved through the VA before committing. #power #jobs

When you are not qualified for a job you want and apply anyway because some LinkedIn clown told you to shoot your shot....but you missed. 👀 When applying to most defense government jobs, or with companies who are OFCCP compliant (look it up), you need to meet 100% of the requirements. At bare minimum, you should meet at least 80% as SOMETIMES the government client MAY make SOME exceptions. For example, if they are seeking someone with 10 years' experience but you only have 7 and meet the other requirements, they may still consider you; it just depends on whether you have the major skills they are seeking and how bad they are trying to fill that role. Also, as a recruiter, I will keep candidates in mind who didn't meet the criteria for a particular role but may meet 100% of the requirements for a DIFFERENT role---- which brings me to my next point 👇 Don't get nasty with a recruiter/hiring manager/employer if your application gets rejected for the role you applied for; they may still be considering you for another current role or consider you for FUTURE roles that they feel you may be a better fit for and may sometimes even offer better pay. However, this is a GREAT opportunity for those engaged companies to take advantage of slow-moving organizations by demonstrating your commitment to hiring military veterans. Some tips: 1. Move with urgency to the next steps in the interview process. 2. Make the candidate feel welcome and engaged when they are on-site for the interview. 3. If possible, include other veterans who will speak positively about the company and culture. 4. If the candidate doesn't make the cut, deliver meaningful feedback. 5. When delivering an offer, make it at or above expectations and help the transitioning candidate and their spouse/significant other with the details of the benefits. (This may be their first foray into civilian benefit programs for many military candidates.)

The only question I remember from my interview with HireMilitary nearly 4 years ago is "Tell me about a time you disagreed with a manager and how you came to a resolution." This question was daunting. I had no idea what to say and hand on heart, had not prepped for this one. Learn from me. Prepare an answer to this! Using the STAR method can help you structure your response effectively. But are you familiar with the technique? ⚡Situation: Describe the specific situation or challenge you faced. ⚡Task: Explain your role and responsibilities in the situation. ⚡Action: Detail the steps you took to address the disagreement.  ⚡Result: Highlight the positive outcome of your actions. An example would be (this is brief for the sake of being indicative and succinct on this post, add more detail where you can): ⚡Situation: My manager and I had different approaches to a new project timeline. ⚡Task: I was responsible for a key deliverable within the project. ⚡Action: I scheduled a meeting to discuss my concerns, presented alternative solutions, and emphasized the potential benefits of my approach. ⚡Result: We reached a compromise that incorporated elements of both our ideas, leading to a successful project outcome. ⭐ Remember, the key is to focus on the good stuff! Use the STAR method to highlight how you handled a tricky situation like a pro. By sharing a positive experience, you’ll show off your problem-solving skills and leave a great impression.
