BLS Report Highlights for our industry and key Temp Penetration trends: The recent Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) report provided several insights into the current state of hiring and staffing: 1. Job openings increased in construction (+138,000) and state and local government, excluding education (+78,000) 2. The total number of job openings for July 2024 was revised up by 38,000 to 7.7 million 3. The US economy added 254,000 jobs in September, surpassing expectations and indicating stability in the labor market 4. Specific sectors showing growth include: o Home health care services (+13,000) o Hospitals (+12,000) o Nursing and residential care facilities (+9,000) 5. Despite the overall job growth, there are indications of a cooling market, with recent reports showing a rise in unemployment and a hiring slowdown These figures suggest a mixed but generally positive outlook for the hiring and staffing industry, with continued job growth in various sectors. Some key points about temporary staffing: 1. Decline in penetration rate: The temporary agency penetration rate decreased to 1.68% in September, down from a revised 1.69% in August 2. Long-term trend: Temporary help services employment has been on an almost uninterrupted decline since peaking at 3.1 million workers in early 2022 3. Historical context: The June 2024 report showed a penetration rate of 1.72% in May, indicating a continued downward trend 4. Unemployment rate: The national unemployment rate decreased in September, suggesting a complex labor market situation These findings indicate a gradual decline in temporary staffing despite overall job growth, potentially reflecting shifts in hiring practices or economic conditions. The BLS penetration rate, also known as the temporary agency penetration rate, refers to the percentage of temporary help employment in relation to total nonfarm employment. However, this is a GREAT opportunity for those engaged companies to take advantage of slow-moving organizations by demonstrating your commitment to hiring military veterans. Some tips: 1. Move with urgency to the next steps in the interview process. 2. Make the candidate feel welcome and engaged when they are on-site for the interview. 3. If possible, include other veterans who will speak positively about the company and culture. 4. If the candidate doesn't make the cut, deliver meaningful feedback. 5. When delivering an offer, make it at or above expectations and help the transitioning candidate and their spouse/significant other with the details of the benefits. (This may be their first foray into civilian benefit programs for many military candidates.)
