Sometimes, serendipity plays a crucial role in shaping what problems we pick to solve, especially at pre PMF startups. A few months ago, a friend building an RMG from India shared two challenges. One of them was in performance marketing that he was uploading a lot of creatives and wanted suggestions for new ones based on previous learnings. At the time, we were focused on something else and didn’t have time to dive in. Later, the idea we were pursuing didn’t work out, but another agency mentioned the same challenge. So, we decided to take a day to figure out a solution. I manually gathered data from videos, putting it into an Excel sheet to run a correlation analysis. At first, I didn’t realize Google AI Studio could read videos, so I used OpenAI to analyze the video frame by frame, and it worked surprisingly well. Through some YouTube tutorials, I discovered AI Studio could do it even better and with an API. That made everything fall into place smoothly. In the video below, you’ll see this analysis for Subway Arabia. We did this as a way to showcase our work via a friend who works at Subway MENA (Middle East and North Africa), hoping to present it to them. This wasn’t an official collaboration, but the data was publicly available, so we scraped and used it. The analytical tools will help the Swiggy team: ⤴ Capture these interactions 📦 Store these interactions ✨ Create reports from these interactions The developers embed a code in the app, which sends the important interactions (app open, clicks, screen change) to these tools. These tools process and store the data at their end. These tools give you a friendly interface to get simple and advanced reports like: 👉🏽 Funnel - How people are moving from one step in journey to another. PMs can Discover any blockers. 👉🏽 Trends - How feature usage is growing or decreasing. 👉🏽 Segments - Creating and analysing various user groups based on behaviour, demographics etc. 👉🏽 Cohort Analysis - Are people engaged in the app, retention quality. and many more. The interactions are sent in the form of events. Each event contains a name and properties to contain any additional information about the event. For example: Button Click event might contains properties like text on button, operation system, app version etc. Similarly user information is also sent and store to relate events with particular users. User information is also arranged in the form of properties, for example: A user can have name, location, favorite restaurant etc. While tools like Mixpanel, MoEngage and other provide out of box solutions for product analytics, many capable teams also choose to do this by their own by following stack: 1. There’s definitely a bigger picture at play here, where the broader ecosystem—whether it’s the companies themselves or the enablers and investors—often focus on short-term targets, sometimes at the cost of long-term strategic thinking. This is especially true when the pressures of scaling quickly or meeting quarterly results are intense. However, it’s encouraging to see the shift happening in the Indian startup ecosystem, especially with the recent government initiatives that aim to foster innovation and create a strong product-driven economy. The goal of making India a “true product nation” is crucial because, ultimately, it’s the companies that innovate and create valuable products, rather than just services, that can lead to sustainable growth and global recognition. With more long-term focus, the mindset towards “product-first” thinking will definitely start to evolve. It’s exciting to see this transition, but as mentioned by Harish Wadhwa sir, patience and boldness are key. We need stakeholders—both within companies and in the supporting ecosystem—to embrace that change, support innovation, and allow space for those long-term bets to materialize. "There is and will always be space for one more." When BluSmart entered the ride-hailing market, it seemed almost impossible to carve out a niche with giants like Ola and Uber dominating the space. Yet, they not only figured out the market but also identified all the pain points and created their unique USP. Today, BluSmart holds a significant market share, with clear unique selling propositions and a loyal customer base. What I admire most is how they’ve managed to change user behavior, challenging the norms that “aisa hi hota hai” (that's just the way it works). I always prefer BluSmart over any other service provider. I book their premium service, and my bookings are always a week or so in advance. Kudos to the BluSmart team for showing us that there’s always room for innovation and improvement, no matter how crowded the market may seem. 🚀 Indian Web Design: Why is it so cluttered ? Whenever we see a banking, ticketing website or any government based portal - we feel like there are too many things on the home page. I found a wonderful video on why they are designed that way? Well, it has roots in Culture, Mobile and Cost. ✨ Cultural Nuances Matter: India’s diverse cultural backdrop influences user preferences in ways you might not expect. High-context cultures here love subtlety – think designs that communicate more with less. 📱 Mobile-First Tech Boom: With smartphone adoption sky rocketed in the post Jio world, Indian designers are all about mobile-first strategies. 💸 Cost-Effective, Not Cheap: Yes, Indian web design is affordable, but that doesn’t mean compromising on quality. Experienced PMs struggle in top tier company interviews while some new college grads crush it. Here is why: Product Thinking: PMs are unprepared for Prospective Interviews across a wide spectrum of common consumer products and stumble. They are surprised by the range of products they are asked about and find it difficult to come up with good responses. Analytical Decision Making: PMs make a lot of Instinctive (Gut) Decisions instead of Principled Decisions with clear explainable rationale. This gets exposed in interviews as they work through prospective questions about products to build, prioritization, metrics debugging, interpreting data and making detailed product decisions. Demonstrating Leadership Skills: PMs tell Long Winded Stories about their project details and people drama instead of Demonstrating the specific leadership skills that the companies are looking for. Communication Skills: PMs misunderstand “Share your underlying thought process” for “Think Out Loud” and as a result don't give “precise responses”. They don’t know how to separate thinking time from speaking time in an interview and how to blend those together to communicate well in an interview.  Mindset: PMs carry a lot of baggage from past failures and current hardships that lead to Unattractive Behaviors. They don’t do the inner work to be positive and resilient before going into interviews. I'm doing a Free 10 hr Weekend PM Interview Program in December to help people land their dream jobs in 2025. 'Oravel Travel' founded in 2012, as an India-based startup in Gurgaon by #RiteshAgarwal (Agarwal), offered budget hotel room listing initially and later (in 2016) began to provide co-living, co-working space and other hospitality services known as OYO Rooms (#OYO). During the growing years, although OYO faced #criticism about its #business policies, #lapses in quality control and not addressing #customer complaints, the company continued to #grow and even had #expanded its operations #overseas, including the most lucrative #hospitality market in the US (in 2019). Agarwal expected OYO to become #number one globally #replicating its #success in India (by making hotel brands adopt its branding and technology) across the world. However, since OYO was #losing money in its #core markets, the company was #forced to #pull out of hundreds of cities, #consolidate and #restructure its business. On the other hand, after a #slow growth in the US, OYO witnessed a significant growth in 2022 and its hotel #count had grown over 320 in over 35 states. Having seen the conventional funnel in large scale operations for products in BYJU'S, and an inverted funnel that starts with free offerings focused on the customer's problems for Design Crescendo gigs, there are a few things that I've picked up about product and service marketing in general. When you're dealing with direct-response and bottom-of-the-funnel marketing, it makes more sense to promote your offer than your product. This is where you drive people into demos, consultations, audits, etc. Often, smaller units start here, and then expand to the middle and top as time and budget allow. The reason why at some point the expansion to other parts of the funnel is essential is because marketing only your offer isn't easily scalable. There are only so many prospects "in-market" at any given time, and at some point, you have to invest in generating demand rather than just capturing it with offer marketing.
