Story: The other day I wanted to order Noodles 🍜 for myself and like most of you I headed to our beloved app Swiggy 🚴🏽‍♂️ (sorry Zomato) Here is the journey that I followed: 1️⃣ Open the app 2️⃣ Search for Noodles 3️⃣ Click on one of the restaurants 4️⃣ Add to cart 5️⃣ Apply Coupon 6️⃣ Make Payment 7️⃣ (Im)Patiently wait for the order To make my experience better ❤️ and get me to spend more money on the app 🤑, the product managers at Swiggy need this data. The analytical tools will help the Swiggy team: ⤴ Capture these interactions 📦 Store these interactions ✨ Create reports from these interactions The developers embed a code in the app, which sends the important interactions (app open, clicks, screen change) to these tools. These tools process and store the data at their end. These tools give you a friendly interface to get simple and advanced reports like: 👉🏽 Funnel - How people are moving from one step in journey to another. PMs can Discover any blockers. 👉🏽 Trends - How feature usage is growing or decreasing. 👉🏽 Segments - Creating and analysing various user groups based on behaviour, demographics etc. 👉🏽 Cohort Analysis - Are people engaged in the app, retention quality. and many more. The interactions are sent in the form of events. Each event contains a name and properties to contain any additional information about the event. For example: Button Click event might contains properties like text on button, operation system, app version etc. Similarly user information is also sent and store to relate events with particular users. User information is also arranged in the form of properties, for example: A user can have name, location, favorite restaurant etc. While tools like Mixpanel, MoEngage and other provide out of box solutions for product analytics, many capable teams also choose to do this by their own by following stack: 1. Event Capture from app: Plain Javascript, React, Angular etc. 2. Event Storage and Streaming: MYSQL, Mongo, Kafka etc. 3. Case study on Zepto- Grofers, BigBasket, Swiggy Instamart, Blinkit, all these companies have one thing in common. That common thing is subversive and divergent customer base. If you use Grofers, then you must definitely be using BigBasket as well. In fact, you must be ordering your groceries from Instamart sometimes. So, the reason for this is because all these companies have one thing in common. Customers download all the apps be it Instamart or Zepto or BigBasket, but they order from the one where they are getting the highest discounts and fastest deliveries from. Aadit Palicha and his friend Kaivalya Vohra were the two 19-year-olds who identified this loophole and started working to eliminate it during the covid interval. They started Kirana Mart as a grocery delivery startup and later on renamed it ZEPTO. While running Kirana Mart, a pattern started emerging. They started focusing on consumer behavior and buying propensity of the clients. To study the consumer behavior they applied the three W's rule- 1) What do consumers want- Quick Delivery, Discounts (In case of Zepto) 2) What will they pay for- Convenience 3) What is available in the market- Instamart, Blinkit, BigBasket Because none of the options available in the market could fulfill the want of quick delivery, people adopted it & it became a consumer behavior. But as soon as they came up with the three-minute delivery, the whole game changed. Introduction of ‘Dark Store Model’- A) Analyzing Buying pattern of consumers. B) Location Engineering- Whenever they enter a new location, they analyze the traffic routes of that area. After that, they check the real estate prices and what will be their average time if they deliver there. C) Opening mini warehouse like stores at a Centralized location. D) Further following the PPB formula (Picking, Packing, Bagging) for faster delivery of received order tickets. Hope this provide with a better insight into how companies like Zepto differ in strategies from big established companies like Swiggy and Zomato (parent companies of Instamart and Blinkit) and still manage to make a name for them. 𝐄𝐱𝐚𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐞: Flipkart entering the groceries delivery market where BigBasket is operating with a 1-day delivery timeline. Here relevant focus area can be more on differentiated offering of Flipkart compared to BigBasket to solve the same problem (may be a shorter delivery timeline of 2 hours). 𝐒𝐜𝐞𝐧𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐨 𝐁: User Needs are addressed by a lateral thinking solution (completely new) in an existing market. 𝐄𝐱𝐚𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐞: Blinkit wants to enter the groceries delivery market with a 10-minute delivery timeline. 🚨Swiggy’s IPO : Read this!🚨 ➡️ Customer Acquisition Cost (CAC)👨 Swiggy operates as a Super App with multiple services (Instamart, Genie and Dineout) built into 1 platform. This reduces it’s CAC significantly, as users are exposed to various offerings once they install the app. On the other hand, Zomato, Blinkit and District by Zomato are standalone products, requiring separate cost in customer acquisition for each vertical. ➡️ Delivery Model 🚚 Swiggy uses “Fission” model for deliveries, which optimises delivery routes and reduces costs. Let me explain this. Suppose 2 friends Ayush & Rajat have ordered “A” item and “B” item respectively. 👉 Now in case of normal delivery system, delivery partner picks up and delivers each order separately. 👉 Where in case of Fission delivery model, delivery partner picks up both item first and then deliver it. This method maximises delivery efficiency 📦 and reduce costs. Now let’s do some maths 🧮 If a standard delivery cost is ₹10 per order, Swiggy’s Fission model can reduce it to ₹8 per order. With approx 10 Lakh orders per day (just assuming), Swiggy is saving ₹20 Lakh. ✅ Daily savings : ₹20 Lakh ✅ Weekly savings : ₹1.4 Cr ✅ Monthly savings : ₹6 Cr ✅ Quaterly savings : ₹18 Cr ✅ Yearly savings : ₹73 Cr So Swiggy is definitely doing a good job! 👏 Now, will you invest in Swiggy? Only D2C teams know how BIG a news it is that Shopify's Advanced Cash on Delivery (COD) app shut down 3 days ago With multiple brands reaching out to us for help I was contemplating how this poorly rated app has been the backbone of building the D2C ecosystem in India The Shopify India team got it built through a dev agency back in the day, because literally no other country had these problems Brands have a deep love / hate relationship with COD Why Love? - Even after a small brand gets someone interested in their products & story It is still tough for the buyer to trust the brand enough to Pre-pay online COD gives them enough comfort to give the "new kid on the block" a chance In numbers, ~60-70% of D2C orders are still COD despite high UPI penetration. Brands see non-trivial increase in conversions when they give cash on delivery Why hate? ~10-30% of COD orders are never delivered for variety of reasons - fraud, bad addresses, change in mind etc That is very expensive for a small business -- ZERO revenue from the returned order, but o Cost of sending the package back and forth o Blocked inventory o Damages to the product This app attempted to solve this by providing control on who gets to see COD based on products, order sizes, pin-codes This problems with offering COD were however much deeper, as we realized over time shopflo merchants helped us create Advanced++ COD functionality, right within our product. Hey LinkedIn Family! I've successfully concluded my latest project, FINOWISE: A Fintech Case Study! 🎊 🎉 The FINOWISE project is in two-fold with this current one being a follow up from the previous one; the responsive website (I shared in my last post). The project has been a tasking and complex one which I'm thrilled to have successfully concluded. I made reasonable attempt in displaying my design experience, skills, principles and processes into the project, which exceed my expectations even. This project made me reflect on my early design beginnings and made me realize that; "design is hard", yet an interesting, creative, tasking and wonderful field of pursuit. During the course of this project, I relentlessly re-evaluated, re-designed, re-tested and even re-ideated my design processes, honestly I almost scrapped out this project due to it's demanding and intricate nature, forfeiting some design gigs, projects and other activities, bringing out the best out of this project, not a perfect solution entirely, which I admit to, yet very efficient to a certain degree. The project stemmed from the need to provide seamless and smooth financial solution to everyday users enabling them gain insights and tracking of their financial activities aiding them make sound financial judgements and wise decisions. The platform would also aid users make daily transactions, request money, and engage in other utilities and financial activities, all in the digital product (mobile app) 📱 . Via the responsive (desktop & mobile), website dashboard which is linked to the mobile app, user get to manage and track their transactions, providing them a seamless experience. Proper accolades 🙌 need be accorded to the two experienced experts in their respective fields who played important roles and dedication to this project. Firstly, Gabriel Isangedighi the UX/UI designer, who seamlessly designed the desktop dashboard version. Secondly, to Kareem Roqib the developer, designated to pushing the website live. Last month we started some mini performance campaigns for Bibli and reduced our cost/ user onboarding by 10X within a month, from the first week of campaign. If you are starting afresh with mobile app campaigns with low budgets and wondering how to go about it, here is a simple playbook that you can follow for Google App based campaigns. Yes, don't need to comment "Interested to know how", just read the post. Basic concepts: 1. Google works on conversion goals - be it installs/ in-app events/ payments - it will optimize what you define. 2. Since you are starting from scratch, Google will not have any previous data for campaign optimisation; hence you cannot start with a goal which comes much later in a conversion funnel (like payments/ etc). A simple playbook 1. Define your conversion funnel (can be Installs --> User onboarding --> A northstar User Activity --> Paid conversions). Idea is to slowly push Google to collect data and optimise on each of these steps 2. Choose app installs and let google maximize conversions - Do measure your late stage funnel metrics to get an idea of the costs. 3. Once there is enough data (can be achieved in 5-10K spends), start another campaign with your next step metric with cost/ conversion target somewhere in between your desired number and what you achieved in install campaigns. Note that if you put cost/ conversion too low, campaign will not spend enough money as Google is still looking for enough data 4. Stepwise lower cost/ conversion to your desired target as Google is able to meet your lower targets. As this achieves scale; you can switch off Install campaigns 5. Creatives - Ensure different personas and messaging are in different ad groups - rest Google will figure out where to show Repeat and rinse till you reach the end stage funnel campaign metric - Eventually run campaigns only for mid stage and end stage funnel metrics. They give the best results. Basically works in similar manner for Meta as well. #GrowthMarketing #GTMExperiments #MobileAppCampaigns

As a product manager, you take care of your customers through your product, where every tweak and feature enhancement is for your user base, and not necessarily to boost business metrics. Take Zomato, for example. By introducing a new feature that announces to the user their cumulative order number - "XYZ number of deliveries made today" - after every order, they’re making me, as a customer among several others, feel special to know that I was, say 31,000th customer of the day who ordered!! Obviously, this feature isn’t at all business-oriented. And it’s definitely not about inducing a subtle sense of FOMO for people like me by showing a huge number of orders for us to order more, and keep that order number climbing. So you see, not everything is thought strategically, it might just as well come from within xD #product #workjoke Zomato
