Application of the Actively Lazy Style Of Investing September’24 turned out to be yet another good month for us at Magadh Capital PMS. Our Future Stars approach delivered impressive returns of 3.54%/69.54%/57.23% annualized over last 1 month/1 year/ 2 years. Value for Growth approach too notched up solid figures of 2.98%/45.36%/41.43% annualized( More details in the charts below). The month of October till date has been relatively choppy for Indian markets. As on 8th October, 2024 the Nifty 50 index has fallen by about 4.6% from the top. Factors like global geopolitics ( escalation in Israel-Iran faceoff, and rising crude oil prices), unleashing of macroeconomic stimulus by the Chinese government, and heavy selling by foreign investors in India seem to be playing the key roles here. We at Magadh Capital PMS remain fully invested. The current market weakness seems short term in nature. Indian stocks are well placed to create long term wealth. Occasional decline of 8-10% in stock markets is par for the course we feel. Interestingly, in last 5-7 years Indian stock markets have behaved rather ebulliently – displaying uncharacteristically low number of correction along the way. As a result the large number of new market participants – who have started investing in last 5-7 years, and have not experienced a proper bear market ( of the kind seen in 2008 or in 2000-2002), get rattled by even a 5% correction. We reckon that the current episode of market weakness is a typical short term dip and is unlikely to turn into a deep and prolonged bear market. At Magadh Capital PMS we apply what we call as the“ Actively Lazy style of investing” . This style is rooted in our ability to remain idle backed by an active thought process. At Magadh Capital PMS, we believe that laziness and indecisiveness are key to successful investing. Our "Actively Lazy" style emphasizes thinking deeply without feeling the need to act immediately.For example, we focus on understanding big-picture trends like interest rate changes and global conflicts, but avoid rushing into decisions basis these. In the market correction witnessed in October so far, we have not felt the need to act – to sell, or to buy. Intellectually though, we remain fairly active - testing our bottom up stock hypotheses, or trying to figure out what can go wrong for our stock calls. By taking our time and avoiding impulsive actions, we can reduce mistakes and protect our investments. We believe that quality over quantity of decisions is essential for long-term wealth growth. Instead of chasing quick wins, we focus on making sound decisions and minimizing losses. The INR 12,864 crore investment in Reliance Retail by Abu Dhabi Investment Authority (ADIA) is only the beginning of wealth creation enabled by Sovereign Wealth Funds(SWFs). Here’s what you need to know about SWFs – SWFs are instrumental in creating wealth for economies and their nationals. SWFs usually invest the state’s surplus revenue in a diverse range of assets to create long-term wealth and economic stability for its citizens. What is interesting is that SWFs are making bold moves, and India has become one of their top destinations. Just last month, ADIA, the largest sovereign wealth fund in the United Arab Emirates(UAE), started operations in India's GIFT City . They have already committed to investing USD 75 billion in Indian projects, including a USD 4-5 billion allocation through the GIFT City. Case Study: Portfolio (mis)management by a reputed wealth management firm We onboarded a client with a portfolio of around INR 50 Crores, earlier managed by a big & reputed wealth management company. The portfolio was constructed for retirement purposes with 12 years of investment horizon. The risk profile of the client is moderate. When we did the portfolio health check-up, we found that there were close to 50 products in the portfolio. 40% allocation in AIFs and 20% average in debt. The annualized returns were around 10% over the last 5 years. All investments were in commission-based regular plans generating a commission of at least INR 50 LAKHS ANNUALLY for the wealth management company & client had NO idea of the hefty commissions going out every year. What's wrong with this portfolio? - Over-diversification: An ideal portfolio shouldn't have more than 15 products (max. 20 depending upon certain cases). When you invest in mutual funds, PMSs, or AIFs, the fund managers will spread the investments across multiple securities. A concentrated portfolio with high-conviction products brings better results. This is a simple understanding then why so many products? Usually, a new product offers a higher commission to distributors. This becomes a strong incentive to keep introducing new products to the portfolio. - Low returns: The underperformance was due to poor-performing equity investments across portfolio. Why these schemes were not changed could be due to the lack of focus of the relationship manager on the portfolio or higher trail commission. - Low liquidity: Excessive exposure to AIFs and some locked-in debt products offered no liquidity to swiftly change allocation in the portfolio if any opportunity arises. - Unsuitable portfolio construction: Despite a moderate risk profile, the portfolio consisted of high-risk AIFs and only around 20% in debt. This is certainly not aligned with the client’s interests. Again, reason could be that AIFs pay higher commissions than PMSs which pay higher commissions than MFs. Our solution: - Asset allocation alignment: Created a broader level asset allocation strategy across equity, debt, and gold to align with the risk profile and investment objective of the client. -Shift to zero-commission Direct Plans: Created a plan to shift all the investments gradually to direct plans of MFs, PMS, and AIFs. This will save the client upwards of INR 50 lakhs in commission payout and will be added to the portfolio gains. For our services, the client pays fees directly to us which is less than 25% of the commissions saved. - Minimize shifting costs: We removed all the underperforming funds by minimizing tax and exit load impact. - Focused portfolio: Reduced the number of products to 14 after thorough research.  The exercise took some time to complete but it was worth the effort to see a satisfied client who knows his retirement portfolio is in reliable hands. #casestudy #wealthmanagement #truemindcapital
