What do names like RBI [ Reserve Bank of India ] , TRAI [ Telecom Regulatory Authority of India ] , RERA [ Real Estate Regulatory Authority ] and SEBI [ Securities and Exchange Board of India ] mean in our day to day lives ? They are known as Regulators . Regulators assume immense significance in a developing country like India for ushering in a more inclusive, transparent, and sustainable growth on all fronts. 1. They protect consumer rights by bringing in stability and strangulating monopolistic tendencies that instill confidence . 2. By enforcing quality, particularly standards, they attract inland and foreign investments that feed growth in economic activities and employment. 3. Third, regulators encourage financial inclusion, infrastructure building, and export competitiveness. Few of the lesser known regulators are MCI [ Medical Council of India ] , CERC [ Central Electricity Regulatory Commission ], FSSAI [ Food Safety and standards Authority of India ]. The Real Estate (Regulation and Development) Act, or RERA, became mandatory in India on May 1, 2017. From this date, all real estate projects and real estate agents were required to register under RERA to ensure transparency, protect buyers, and bring accountability to the real estate sector. Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) is the primary regulator for mutual fund investments. SEBI sets rules and guidelines for mutual fund companies to ensure they operate transparently and fairly, protecting the interests of investors. Additionally, the Association of Mutual Funds in India (AMFI) plays a supporting role by promoting ethical practices and investor education, though it is not a regulatory authority like SEBI. 𝟭. 𝗖𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿 𝗖𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗴𝗼𝗿𝗶𝘇𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗰𝘆: SEBI has categorized mutual funds (equity, debt, hybrid, etc.) with standardized characteristics. 𝟮. 𝗨𝗻𝗶𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗔𝗰𝗿𝗼𝘀𝘀 𝗠𝘂𝘁𝘂𝗮𝗹 𝗙𝘂𝗻𝗱 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗻𝗶𝗲𝘀: By setting guidelines for fund types, SEBI ensures that similar schemes from different mutual fund companies are aligned in structure and strategy. 𝟯. 𝗜𝗻𝘃𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗔𝗰𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆: SEBI's guidelines require mutual funds to rebalance portfolios regularly and disclose all relevant information, promoting accountability and protecting investors from misleading practices. Oct 2017, all the existing mutual funds were regulated and classified under broad categories. Several MF's were merged or stopped to meet the criteria. This particular step was very pivotal and has bought high level of standardization and inspired confidence in MF industry.

Investors' interest expected to increase in corporate bonds also Capital markets regulator Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) chief Madhabi Puri Buch said on Wednesday that India's inclusion in global bond indices is expected to increase investor interest in corporate bonds as well. Addressing a conference organized by the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) and its education-focused capacity-building body NISM, Ms. Buch said the regulator will further improve the minimum investment size of real estate investment trusts (REITs) and infrastructure investment trusts. It will reduce it to enable the common people's participation in it. JPMorgan Chase & Co. and Bloomberg have announced the inclusion of securities issued by the Government of India in their indices. This is expected to bring an inflow of up to $40 billion from foreign investors into the Indian bond market. Ms. Buch said the younger generation looking for wealth creation tools should look at REITs and InvITs, which help an investor take partial ownership in prime assets like real estate and infrastructure. Referring to the strategies being adopted to make these investment instruments more popular, she said, 'The level of interest of investors, especially foreign investors, in the InvIT sector is very significant.' Ms. Buch said that SEBI has already reduced the minimum investment amount in such asset classes as the risk in such assets has been reduced. She also said that we have continuously brought it down and we intend to bring it down further and make it very affordable. At the same event, SEBI whole-time member Ananth Narayan said that the regulator will launch a survey on the level of awareness of investors and the means of obtaining information.
