Industrial Fishermen ≠ local people in small boats. A harsh realization that felt like a slap of reality when I read this stat:
1% 𝘰𝘧 𝘣𝘰𝘢𝘵𝘴 𝘤𝘢𝘵𝘤𝘩 50% 𝘰𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘧𝘪𝘴𝘩.
Just one of these factory vessels or “mega trawlers” catch 400,000 kilos of fish per day which is nearly equal to what 𝘰𝘯𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘰𝘶𝘴𝘢𝘯𝘥 small-scale fishing vessels catch in the same amount of time.
And what's worse is that they’re destroying Europe’s coastal biodiversity along with the local economy.
Here are 5 ways these sea monsters are wreaking havoc:
🎣Overfishing (which leads to species collapse)
🐢Bycatch (i.e catching endangered marine animals such as turtles, dolphins and seabirds)
🪸 Habitat Destruction (the heavy nets damage the seabed)
🐋 Vessel noise (affects essential life functions for a lot of marine life)
This leads to:
❌ Decreased Ecosystem Resilience: Loss of biodiversity = weaker ecosystems in the face of climate change, pollutants, and invasive species.)
❌ Species Distribution Changes: fish populations relocating because of habitat loss or pressure = affected local ecosystems and the communities that depend on them.
Sometimes I like LinkedIn because it’s inspiring and hopeful.
Other times, it’s a (needed) reality check.
But these realizations lead to change.
