Last Friday was International Women's Day, and also Indigenous Women's Day. It is a day and week where we celebrate and highlight Indigenous Women. Indigenous Women are key knowledge holders, environmental protectors, and spiritual guides in many Indigenous groups around the world, due to their closeness to the natural world. They are also some of the most marginalised and vulnerable groups globally, facing high rates of femicide, discrimination, and violence. We stand in solidarity with Indigenous Women and aim to prioritise them in our programmes and funding in order to address this inequality. We fight to ensure Indigenous Women's voices and contributions are heard and recognised. Today is Zero Discrimination Day, and this year's theme is health and the way it ties into human rights. For Indigenous Peoples this is a highly relevant topic, as Indigenous health and rights are heavily intertwined, and Indigenous Peoples face multiple layers of discrimination globally. In Canada, lawsuits in 2018 highlighted that Indigenous Women were discriminated against when seeking healthcare, in the form of post-partum forced sterilisations in Saskatchewan. Such discrimination massively affects Indigenous Peoples' health, wellbeing, and culture. We must ensure that work against discrimination includes Indigenous Peoples, and their health and wellbeing. Happy World Seagrass Day! Seagrasses are a haven for marine wildlife and biodiversity, as well as accounting for 10% of the ocean's carbon storage capacity. Seagrass restoration is key to mitigating against biodiversity loss and climate change. In Shark Bay, Western Australia, Indigenous rangers have developed a seagrass restoration program entwining traditional ecological knowledge and genetically informed science. The Malgana rangers are the custodians of Shark Bay, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and consider their cultural heritage to be preserved under large seagrass meadows. Ranger programs such as this benefit both seagrass restoration, as well as restoring a sense of belonging and reconnection among Malgana peoples to country, culture, and language. It's International Mother Language Day! This is a day to appreciate the diversity of languages on our planet, including Indigenous Languages. UNESCO declared 2022-32 the International Decade of Indigenous Languages, due to Indigenous languages being particularly at risk of being displaced by colonial languages such as English, Spanish, French, and Portuguese. Languages contain a wealth of knowledge, cultural expression, history, and richness. If they are lost, then all their embedded language is lost too. Language revitalisation is taking place across the globe, and shows the resilience of Indigenous language communities, and the value of diverse languages, cultures, and ways of life. Social justice is about ensuring the fair treatment and equitable status of all people and social groups. Indigenous Peoples are some of the most marginalised groups globally, with threats to their human rights, land rights, and cultural continuity. Indigenous women and youth are particularly affected. Today is #WorldRadioDay! Radios have been key to communicating across regions for generations, and are a tool in the arsenal being used to revitalise and maintain Indigenous languages today. Indigenous languages are increasingly under threat of extinction due to a lack of fluent speakers. Only 2% of language are spoken widely online. Efforts are being made to increase Indigenous language exposure and fluency among Indigenous groups and wider populations. Radio stations across the world, including Nuxalk Radio in British Columbia, and Papa Reo/Te Hiku Media radio station in Aotearoa, are paving the way to accessible Nuxalk and Māori language learning through radio. Indigenous language revitalisation is key to maintaining cultural diversity and knowledge. The Center for Braiding Indigenous Knowledge and Science (CBIKS) has been established with participation from Aotearoa in one of the four hubs. This global initiative unites indigenous scholars, knowledge keepers, and scientists to collaborate on research projects that bridge traditional indigenous knowledge and Western science. CBIKS aims to promote understanding, build relationships, and share knowledge between indigenous communities and the scientific community.
