The research discusses the case for government intervention to establish a domestic steel value chain in order to capitalise on Scotland’s steel scrap. Scotland Ports: A Future Vision: Examines the potential of Scottish ports as catalysts for circular energy infrastructure, promoting circular businesses, facilitating decommissioning with remanufacturing/rental solutions, and creating sustainable local jobs. Interesting PhD opportunity for those with a keen interest in public engagement, climate change and the energy sector. As the impacts of climate change increase, and we drive forward the net zero transition, its going to be crucial that the 1) the public understand the changes to our energy network and reasons for it and 2) as a sector we need to understand the public’s opinion about the changes in our energy system, to allow us to make effective policy decisions, looking at issues such as level of service and willingness to pay.

Why Protecting the Seabed is Crucial in the Fight Against Climate Change 🌍 A new study from the Scottish Association for Marine Science (SAMS) reveals that seabed habitats could capture almost three times more carbon than the UK's forests each year if left undisturbed. Seabed sediments like mud and silt store a staggering 244 million tonnes of organic carbon in just the top 10cm! This discovery highlights the urgent need for robust legal frameworks and Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) to shield these vital ecosystems from activities like trawling, dredging, and deep-sea mining. MPAs can play a pivotal role in carbon sequestration, strengthening our fight against climate change. New research suggests that the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC), a key system of ocean currents, could collapse as early as the late 2030s. This system, crucial for regulating global climate, is at risk due to rising ocean temperatures and altered salinity caused by climate change. The collapse of the AMOC could lead to severe climate shifts, including drastic cooling in Europe and North America and altered weather patterns in the Amazon. The UK government has committed nearly £22bn to carbon capture projects in Merseyside and Teesside. Another fantastic output from the marine geoscientists at BGS, from a single map we can understand the positions of past ice margins (to predict geotechnical properties), reconstruct former river drainage patterns (to predict archaeological potential) and track sediment mobility (to predict burial/scour potential of seabed infrastructure). If you work in the offshore renewables sector, so much can be gained from this free resource ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
