Sea fans, also known as gorgonians, are captivating marine creatures that thrive in tropical and subtropical waters around the globe. These colonial organisms boast a stunning appearance with their branching, fan-like structures that gracefully sway with the ocean currents. Belonging to the order #Alcyonacea, sea fans are filter feeders, using specialised tentacles to capture plankton and other tiny organisms from the water. Many sea fans also harbour symbiotic algae called zooxanthellae, which contribute to their striking colours and provide them with nutrients through photosynthesis. Sea fans serve as vital habitats in coral reef ecosystems, offering shelter to a diverse array of marine life including fish, crustaceans, and other invertebrates. The effects of #ocean acidification on #marine #species and #ecosystems. Ocean acidification is a direct result of increased levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, which is absorbed by the ocean and leads to a decrease in pH levels. This change in ocean chemistry has significant impacts on marine species and ecosystems. When the ocean becomes more acidic, it's harder for sea creatures like shellfish and corals to make their shells and skeletons. This makes them weaker and more likely to be harmed by predators and other threats. This can disrupt the whole ocean ecosystem, as many animals depend on these creatures for food and shelter. Meet the #salps, the peculiar transparent creatures that '#clean' the #air along the #Spanish coast while we sleep. These fascinating animals capture up to 4,000 tons of #CO₂ every night by feeding on #phytoplankton. Since 1980, the Mediterranean has warmed by 0.4°C per decade, and this sea is heating 20% faster than the global average due to #greenhousegases. Factors like #overfishing, #pollution, maritime #trade, and #coastal development are altering and #endangering the Mediterranean #ecosystem. The 'tropicalization' of the Spanish coasts has introduced over a thousand #invasive species, including the Salpa fusiformis. Despite their jellyfish-like appearance, salps are tunicates that filter large volumes of water, playing a crucial role in carbon capture. They can live solitarily or in colonies, rapidly growing due to their hermaphroditic nature.
