ECA disseminates expertise in the realm of environmental crime through tailor-made courses designed for professionals.
Sobre nosotros
EnviCrime Academy (ECA) is an international private training organization dedicated to creating and delivering specialized courses on environmental crime. The genesis of the EnviCrime Academy can be traced back to the LIFE SATEC Project, which amplifies the role of the 'EnviCrimeNet' network—a consortium of European Law Enforcement Agencies committed to collaborative efforts in combating environmental crime. EnviCrime Academy is dedicated to empowering professionals in the battle against environmental crime by developing specialized training tools. We achieve this by delivering courses tailored for individuals actively engaged in combating environmental crime. Our primary goal is to harness expertise from various sources, including universities, law enforcement officers, criminologists, lawyers, and judicial experts. These insights will be channeled to different client segments, including law enforcement agencies at local, regional, and national/international levels with competencies in the prevention/detection of environmental crime. Furthermore, we aim to extend our services to non-governmental organizations (NGOs), environmental professionals (such as those in forestry and coastal protection), and other community services. 🌍 As 2024 draws to a close, a pivotal moment in the global response to #climate #change approaches. Beginning 2 December 2024, the International Court of Justice (ICJ) will hold public hearings on the #obligations of #States under international law to #protect the #climate system for present and future generations. This landmark initiative, led by Vanuatu and supported by a broad coalition of UN Member States, seeks to clarify: 💡 States’ legal responsibilities to mitigate #greenhouse gas emissions and protect the #environment; and 💡 The legal #consequences for States whose actions or omissions have caused significant #harm to the climate system, particularly for vulnerable communities such as small island developing States. With 91 written statements, 62 written comments, and over 100 oral presentations submitted, the proceedings underscore the critical role of #international #law in addressing the #climate crisis. The International Court of Justice (ICJ)’s advisory opinion, anticipated in early 2025, will provide authoritative guidance on the scope of States’ obligations, shaping national and regional legal frameworks and informing future #UN climate negotiations. While advisory opinions are not legally binding, the International Court of Justice (ICJ)’s status as the principal judicial organ of the United Nations ensures its findings carry significant weight. This process reflects the increasing use of legal avenues to address climate change, building on recent decisions such as the recognition of the #human #right to a clean, healthy, and sustainable environment and the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea/Tribunal international du droit de la mer 's ruling on States' responsibilities to combat marine pollution and ocean acidification. The International Court of Justice (ICJ)’s deliberations represent a significant step in clarifying the legal landscape of climate action, setting a precedent for #accountability, and ensuring a #sustainable future for generations to come. #ClimateGovernance #InternationalLaw #ICJ #ClimateJustice #SustainableDevelopment https://lnkd.in/dwPnfVnX

📖⚖️ It was a pleasant surprise to be sent a review of my book, published in the Journal of International Humanitarian Legal Studies (2024) 1–7: https://lnkd.in/ehiVbsGJ The review is by environmental law scholar Aaron Dumont, who states that my work on Prosecuting Environmental Harm Before the International Criminal Court "is no less relevant even two years after its publication". He notes that "[t]his book is not limited to questions of substantive law or to Article 8(2)(b)(iv) Rome Statute, which is the statute’s only provision that criminalizes damages to the environment directly ... [but] also deals intensively with procedural questions and examines all the opportunities and challenges that arise in proceedings with an ecological dimension before the ICC." As all academics will appreciate, it takes a lot of late and dark nights to complete a book, both literally and figuratively. After that effort, it's a boost to see other scholars engaging with the work. Thanks go to the reviewer and the journal, and I hope my research will contribute to redressing grave attacks on the environment, particularly as we consider adopting the crime of Ecocide under international law. #ecocide #environment International Criminal Court Essex Law School Essex Human Rights Centre
