Today we celebrate World Seagrass Day! 🌿 Posidonia oceanica is an endemic seagrass species of the Mediterranean Sea that forms underwater forests fundamental for the health of our ocean. 🌱 Here 3 main reasons why Posidonia oceanica is so important for the marine ecosystem: 1) It produces approx. the 80% of coastal oxygen production 2) It is estimated that 1 sqm of Posidonia oceanica meadow can absorb about 130kg of CO2 per year 3) Posidonia oceanica meadows can host over 350 different marine species At One Ocean Foundation we are committed to protect and restore these precious habitats through our Blue Forests project - check it out: https://lnkd.in/dMXHxcG4 💙 #WorldSeagrassDay #BlueForestsProject #OneOceanFoundation #Posidoniaoceanica #PosidoniaRestoration #SeagrassRestoration #MediterraneanSea #Biodiversity #30x30 #UNagenda #WeAreAllOneOcean #BlueNaturalCapital #UNOceanDecade #GenerationRestoration #ClimateAction

Today is World Oceans Day 🌊 The ocean covers over 70% of the planet. It is our life source, supporting humanity’s sustenance and that of every other organism on earth. The ocean produces at least 50% of the planet’s oxygen, is home to most of earth’s biodiversity, and is the main source of protein for more than a billion people worldwide. Not to mention, the ocean is key to our economy with an estimated 40 million people being employed by ocean-based industries by 2030. Even though all its benefits, the ocean is now in need of support. With 90% of big fish populations depleted, and 50% of coral reefs destroyed, we are taking more from the ocean than can be replenished. We need to work together to create a new balance with the ocean that no longer depletes its bounty but instead restores its vibrancy and brings it new life. #worldoceansday #ocean #oceanlife #oceans #savetheocean #protectocean #oceanconservation

Exploring our pilot sites 📍 Eilat is a coastal city in southern #Israel, known for its stunning #coralreefs in the Red Sea. 🪸🐠 The area is a unique #biodiversity hotspot, home to vibrant coral ecosystems and a wide array of marine life. Unlike many other reefs, Eilat’s corals have shown some resilience to warming seas, making it a critical site for conservation efforts. 🌡️🌊 However, it faces threats from #climatechange, #pollution, and #tourism, making projects like OCEAN CITIZEN’s reef protection and restoration initiatives essential for preserving this rare marine treasure. 🤝🩵 Partnering with local institutions, #OceanCitizen supports reef restoration and aims to protect this biodiverse marine ecosystem from climate change and human impacts. As part of the OCEAN CITIZEN project, Eilat’s reefs serve as a key pilot site for examining how climate change, urbanization, and human activity impact fragile reef ecosystems. Eilat site is vital for testing innovative approaches in coral restoration, with findings that could inform reef management efforts in similar environments worldwide. Collaboration here aims to advance research and practical strategies for reef restoration in the Gulf of Eilat and beyond. The Red Sea is the hottest, and saltiest sea on earth, but vibrant, healthy coral reefs thrive here. Researchers want to understand what makes these corals so resilient, as it could unlock how to saving threatened reefs around the world. In other regions, climate change is causing abnormally high ocean temperatures and increased acidification, both of which are damaging many large coral reefs. Coral reefs provide refuge and food for the majority of ocean life, so saving them is a top priority in preserving the health of the ocean. Happy World Turtle Day! I love encountering these iconic ocean creatures. Turtles seem so chill when you encounter them. They are particularly vulnerable to plastic pollution as they like to eat jellies and many plastic bags floating can look similar to a jelly. Let's consider our oceans as the pristine and wonderful place that it should be. We should do our best to never allow chemicals, garbage, sewage, plastics and so much more. Consider beautiful turtles and help push for the changes to clean up our oceans. Please check out the organizations that Bodhi mentions here in his post! #turtles #oceans #biodiversity #future #marinecreatures #plasticpollution #sewage #chemicals #oceanconservation

Did you know that coral reefs aren’t the only stunning underwater coral ecosystems? 🌊 Meet the coral forests.🪸 A society of soft, leather, and stony corals that grow together to create homes, nurseries, and feeding grounds for countless marine species. But these beautiful, thriving ecosystems are under threat. Vulnerable to trawling, pollution, and climate change, coral forests need our attention just as much as their more famous tropical reef cousins. These are the deep sea or cold water Coral Gardens from the Annan Seamount (200–4500 m) off Equatorial West Africa. What can we do to adapt our ocean activities to safeguard these ecosystems? #biodiversity #Sustainability #corals credit: National Oceanography Centre, Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike 3.0

🌊 Beneath the waves lies a vibrant world rich in diversity and mystery. From the stunning coral reefs, known as the "rainforests of the sea," to the enchanting abyssal depths housing extraordinary life forms, our oceans hold treasures waiting to be discovered. 🌐 These ecosystems are not just visually captivating but also crucial for our planet’s health. Coral reefs support biodiversity, while deep-sea organisms like the bioluminescent anglerfish showcase nature's creativity. Ocean currents, the lifeblood of these waters, influence marine migrations, exemplified by the incredible journey of the loggerhead sea turtle. 🐢 Yet, with discovery comes a responsibility to protect these fragile habitats. Our oceans regulate climate, provide resources, and harbor potential medical breakthroughs. As we explore, we must tread respectfully to preserve these wonders for future generations. Dive deeper into the hidden treasures of our oceans and the imperative of stewardship in our latest article. 🌍 Read more: https://lnkd.in/e3tAdygU #Oceans #MarineConservation #Biodiversity #CoralReefs #DeepSea #Sustainability #Environment #ClimateChange #Explore #Stewardship

Coral reefs play a critical role in the health and prosperity of all marine life. Today is the start of #CoralReefAwarenessWeek! Help us celebrate the beauty and critical role they play in ocean health including: 🪸 Providing habitat to roughly 25% of marine species, despite covering less than 1% of the ocean floor. 🪸 Providing dense algae & plankton populations as food chain building blocks 🪸 Acting as natural barriers protecting coastlines from erosion 🪸 Playing a key role in absorbing CO2, helping mitigate climate change 🪸 Participating in nutrient cycling within marine ecosystems, contributing to the recycling and circulation of essential nutrients, such as nitrogen and phosphorus, through interactions with algae, fish and other organisms. Coral reefs are an essential ecosystem to protect and conserve. The 2nd opening of the Munje octopus fishery closure came bearing 268kg of catch, which is a drop from the previous opening catch of 649kg, heavy clouds, and a plethora of learning. 1. Seasons: April marks the beginning of strong Southeast Monsoon winds, which contributed to fewer low tide hours, reducing gleaning time from the intended 3 to 2 hours each day and deposition of sediments from a nearby bridge under construction into the closure area, clogging most octopus habitat and forcing them to relocate to cleaner areas. 2. Climate change urgency: April 2024 saw record high ocean temperature of 33°C, prompting octopus migration to cooler waters & mass coral bleaching. These hurdles, albeit being anticipated, come as a blow to this conserving community, whose drive to conserve has only grown stronger and are now more eager to explore restoration measures to protect their area from looming biodiversity loss.
