Still relevant today, more than ever. Inclusiveness has never been and will never be a priority for BigTech companies budgets. And that too, should not be some revelation. But the extent to which these companies don't care, as often as this keeps going on, would probably shock most people. It was great to have a day away from the desk to enjoy Capacity’s Fundamentally Different event last week at the Bluecoat. There was so much food for thought… James Plunkett promoting the questions: How often do we change the problem to fix the machinery, rather than seeking a true solution? How do we work with a sense of urgency but not emergency to avoid burnout? How to do we embed new ways of problem solving for our modern world that are: ↔️ Relational, ♻️ Iterative, 📍 Place-based, ❤️ People-centric, and 🤖 More tech, more human? 💬The expert panel wonderfully hosted by Liz Cross, which included the vast array of experience from Naomi Hulston, Elizabeth Hartley, Kate Ardern and Phil Porter. ⚡️The lightning talks showcasing innovative ways of thinking and operating by Open Door , LCR Civic Data Cooperative, Yonder and Kindred LCR - all doing LCR proud! 💡And last, but not least, the We Are Juno CIC workshop I was able to join which demonstrated just how much grit and determination is required to challenge the status quo, including how critical it is to find funding partners that are aligned in vision and values. There was a lot to take in and it was energising to chat to numerous other people working in this space. It definitely feels like there’s some growing overlap in the mindsets re the approaches to strengthening the third sector vs private sector businesses operating as a ‘force for good’. It’ll be interesting to see how this plays out over the coming years.

At the start of MovementX—circa 2018 in the photo below—we took a large amount of time to figure out our values. It was one of the best decisions we ever made. After developing a huge list of options, the ‘core team’ grouped them by category (some categories are pictured above) and then began the hard part of narrowing down to a tight set of meaningful core values. We ended with the list of four core values that you see today: 🫂 Empathy ❤️🔥 Passion x Purpose 🌐 Community ⭐ Kaizen Our successes are testaments of putting our values first. And in times of challenge the values are guiding lights to how we should make tough decisions. If our vision is our why and our mission is what, then our values are how: how we want to act as we pursue our mission and vision. They give rise to our social expectations, operations, and much more. The bottom line: Since 2018, our values have guided the company’s actions and they will continue to remain at the forefront of all company activities. We've got an incredible lineup: Nimi B., Adrian Rashad Driscoll, Jonathan Exume, Zaakirah Muhammad and the brilliant Jenna Ritten (she/her). This session is all about how AI is transforming workplace communities, especially for women. We’ll dive into the intersection of AI with Digital Entertainment, Gaming, Branding, AR/VR, and Healthtech (like PCOS). But here's the kicker—while AI might be advancing our professional lives, I'm here to remind you that wealth isn’t just about the numbers in your bank account. For me, real wealth is about time—time spent with loved ones, time to take care of myself, and time to say "No" to the things that don’t serve me. I could chase after every dollar, but I’d rather be present. Present for my spouse, for self-care, for the moments that truly matter. Because let’s face it—there will always be more DMs to respond to, more deals to close, more money to earn. But memories? Those don’t wait. Today was an extraordinary day, one I had the privilege of beginning with a visit to Kernelcon, Omaha's premier information security conference. The energy was palpable, and the air was filled with the buzz of innovation and the exchange of cutting-edge ideas. I was there for a very special reason, invited by Dan Browder to emcee a DEI-focused lunch panel aptly titled "Unmasquerade: Being Your Authentic Self." This theme resonates deeply with me, echoing the core message of authenticity I often discuss in my book and have personally embraced. Accepting every part of who we are, despite others' acceptance, is a journey of courage and self-love. In today’s session, amidst the backdrop of ongoing challenges to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI), I chose to spotlight the essence of our discussions: the foundational elements of humankindness and love. Strip away all the labels and titles, and that’s what you're left with—core principles that don't require any special recognition to practice. Each of us, regardless of our backgrounds or roles, plays a critical part in fostering equitable spaces where everyone can thrive. Today's lunch was a testament to moving in the right direction, a moment of collective acknowledgment and progress. Typically, diversity can be scant in such environments, yet today broke the mold. The diversity I witnessed among attendees was not just refreshing; it was inspiring, signaling a shift towards more inclusive professional gatherings. It fills me with immense joy to have been part of this event, and my calendar is already marked for next year’s Kernelcon. A huge shout out to the organizers and everyone involved in bringing Kernelcon to life. It’s gatherings like these that remind us of the power of community and the strength found in our shared commitment to making the tech world a more inclusive place.
