Last week, we had the pleasure of meeting the Kibble team in frosty Scotland. This learning visit was an excellent opportunity to hear about their approach to care and the brilliant work they've been doing for more than a century. Thank you so much to the team at Kibble for welcoming us!

'We can't keep doing the same thing... we need to create space to focus on the future and what are we going to need to help families stay together, at the same time as focusing on the here and now'. 🎙️ ⭐ Tune into yesterday's episode of Politics North West to hear our Director Sophie Clarke talk about how Juno is working differently by listening to our experts by experience, valuing our staff and working in partnership with local authorities and social investors. 👇 https://lnkd.in/esv_F5gb

It's great to see the government working on improving outcomes for children in residential care. Bringing more transparency to finances in the sector, improving safeguarding systems and expanding the offer for young people beyond 18 all closely align with our values as a non-profit organisation focussed on providing brilliant care.
Brilliant to see this morning’s announcement by Bridget Phillipson, Education Secretary, on steps they’re taking to embark on major reform of the children’s social care system. In particular, her explicit ask for “not-for-profit providers and those backed by social investment… to come forward to set up homes to strengthen the system" 🚀 https://lnkd.in/gVgTkp-8 At Better Society Capital we’ve been researching children’s social care for the past 2 years to understand the potential role of social investment in delivering better experiences and lifetime outcomes for children in care, who are some of the most underserved people in the UK. The care system is buckling under significant cost pressures, with a growing number of children entering care, profiteering by select for-profit providers and a lack of investment in preventative services. But among these challenges, we’ve come across ⭐70+ incredible organisations who are delivering high-quality services & homes for children in care, including We Are Juno CIC, Lighthouse Pedagogy Trust, Social adVentures and New Reflexions. Equally, 60+ social investors and impact-aligned mainstream investors are stepping up to provide the patient, impact-aligned capital 💷 that these providers need to grow their services. And most importantly, the Department for Education and Local & Combined Authorities across the country are shifting to take a collaborative approach to local partnerships with VCSEs & social investors, with GMCA and Liverpool leading the way 🤝 Changing the trajectory of children’s social care will by no means be an easy or quick fix, but I’m incredibly hopeful that we’re starting to move the needle, one child at a time Esmée Fairbairn Foundation Treebeard Trust People's Postcode Lottery Joe Ray Social and Sustainable Capital Bridges Fund Management Ltd. We're so honoured to have Sherrie on our team, their contributions through the last few years have been invaluable to us. Thank you, Sherrie, for your insights and such a powerful reflection this Care Leavers Week.
#NationalCareLeaversWeek When I stumbled upon an advert to join We Are Juno CIC in October of 2022 I jumped at the opportunity to find some community. I met a group of people with this underlying knowledge of what it means to be a care leaver, I felt at home. Over the time I’ve been involved with Juno I have done things I never would have dreamt of, like speaking at events or on panels, seeing beautiful homes genuinely care for the people in them, even taking part in interview processes. Growing up a constant feature of my reviews would be that I didn’t speak and that my kinship carers found this strange and unsettling. Juno made me feel that I deserve to be heard just as much as anyone else. I don’t think I could ever thank them enough for that. I now sit on the board as an apprentice NED and get to see the intelligence, compassion and drive to make sure that Juno genuinely helps those in their care. I have left meetings in absolute awe of the people around me and I am respected and appreciated just as much as those people?! Im now 28, too old for any of the care leaver opportunities in my area, still not over the trauma of life in care but able to speak up now. I would be doing myself and others a disservice if I didn’t speak for the most vulnerable of us. The care leavers that didn’t make it, that are sleeping on the streets not browsing LinkedIn. This years theme “all of us, we are one” is a stunning sentiment. But I worry that’s as far as it goes. Things aren’t getting better out here, there’s so little support and people have lost faith in council services. I won’t be offering false affirmation to services who post the sentiment but don’t follow through. Instead I pose the question of how can we ensure that we are one? How can we ensure all of us are being heard? What is being done to include us all and how can I help?

Our team had the pleasure of attending the Liverpool City Council Care Leavers Conference this week. Words from Ashley John-Baptiste stuck with us, that too often, children in the care system have to outperform people's expectations in order for adults around them to see their true potential. Professionals need to use the power and influence they have to show children that they always matter and help them achieve their goals. It was inspiring hearing from local care leavers doing incredible things, with a sobering reminder from Molly Ann that many care-experienced young people in our region are still struggling - we mustn't be complacent, but continually push for better support, and, as our Expert by Experience Sherrie stressed, lasting well beyond the 25 yrs age cap.
