The prevalent negative perception toward abortion persists. As part of our ongoing effort to reshape the narrative around abortion access in Kenya in collaboration with Well Made Strategy and local influencers, we are developing and disseminating bite-sized, easy-to-access, and evidence-based content. Arrogance or too much trust in your capacity or experience can lead to failure. Most communications staff members at NGOs face issues with technical team members who do not care about their opinions while covering stories or news. Certainly, there are areas where communications people may not understand, but this does not mean that technical people or managers have the right to control the communications products. Opening the channels of discussion and orientation is the key to a win-win situation.

As we concluded a productive day at the Learning Exchange, we had the privilege of hearing from Titus Mumia, Director of Health Administration, planning and administration in Kakamega County, who presented on the Facility Improvement Financing (FIF) initiative and its significant impact on healthcare funding for Health Products and Technologies (HPTs) procurement at the county and health facility levels. Titus highlighted that the Act defines the processes for revenue collection and the distribution of funds between county and national governments. Kakamega County, home to 193 public health facilities—including 19 Level 4 and 5 hospitals—relies heavily on both national government allocations (57.2% of its monthly revenue) and cash collections (42.8%). He noted that the county’s budget allocation for healthcare last year stood at KES 3 billion, with a projection of KES 3.5 billion for the current financial year. Despite this, insufficient funding remains a pressing challenge, particularly when it comes to procurement processes for essential health products. There is a need to arrange separate discussions addressing the difficulties counties face in receiving the appropriated health funds from the national government. If you are interested in development communications, this post is for you. Last week, I represented Bridge Connect Africa at a Communications Co-Creation workshop led by Education As A Vaccine. Here are a few insights I gained from working with communications and policy advocacy experts on creating a strategic behavioral change communications plan: 👉First: You need to understand the goal of your project. In other words, start with the end in mind. Ask yourself, “What does success look like during the process and after the project is completed?” This will help you stay on track. 👉Second: Identify your target audience and the role each group plays. Determine who your supporters are, who your opposition is, and who is likely to remain neutral. This understanding will guide your message framing and focus. 👉Third: Choose your platforms wisely. While digital communication is increasingly popular and effective, it shouldn’t be your sole focus. Since you’ve identified your stakeholders, find out the best ways to reach them and encourage them to take action. This might involve one-on-one meetings, conferences, dialogues, or strategic advocacy approaches. 👉Finally, remember: You can’t reach everyone with your message at the same time.
