🌍 Sustainable Spotlight Friday #4 Environmental and Social Initiatives at Waregem Koerse 🐎 For our last Sustainable Spotlight Friday, we shine a spotlight on Waregem Koerse, one of the oldest events in Belgium. For its 2023 edition, Waregem Koerse set ambitious sustainable goals and adopted several initiatives to reach them. Let’s dive into two of these projects: • Environmental innovation: Partnering with Van Poucke Rental led to the adoption of 100% vacuum toilets, up from 50% in 2022. This change alone resulted in a significant 90% reduction in water usage for toilet facilities compared to traditional toilets. • Social impact: Under the guidance of Green Panther - Sustainable Events Consultancy and with key contributions from Bram Vandewalle, the event introduced the horse race 4Brain to raise awareness and support for brain disease research. The race gained national attention as it was broadcast live, showcasing how sports events can effectively combine excitement with meaningful social causes. At Circular Unity, we applaud Waregem Koerse for their dedication to both environmental sustainability and social responsibility. Their comprehensive efforts serve as a powerful example of how events can drive sustainable progress and create meaningful community impacts. Thank you for following our Sustainable Spotlight Friday series in celebration of Earth Month 💙 #CircularUnity #Sustainability #ClimateAction #WaregemKoerse #SustainableInnovation

Takeover of the bridge St Esprit: done! The 50 flags made from milk waste transform the Adour into a river of milk, a common landscape element in Eastern European fairy tales, which has a French equivalent: the Pays de Cocagne. It is a land where everything is in abundance, with rivers of milk and shores of kissel (a traditional dessert in northern Europe), where animals run and fly already roasted, houses are made of gingerbread, cheese is everywhere instead of stones... Today, the futuristic approach of the Pays de Cocagne sheds light on this medieval dream. The way to achieve this could be the circular economy, which allows us to preserve resources, protect the environment and share fairly, while offering the best to everyone. As part of the Points de Vue street art festival, research is being carried out into how citizens can get involved in urban circular economy initiatives to actively contribute to the recycling and reuse of materials, thus improving sustainability in the short and long term. This is the next stage of our research after the 59th Venice Biennale in 2022 and STALKER within Normandie Impressionniste in 2023-2024.

Does your park host events organized by external partners? Let’s ensure these events reflect your park's commitment to sustainability! One effective approach is creating contracts or guidelines with zero-waste measures for event organizers. Here’s how to get started: ✅ Define Obligations: Specify required zero-waste actions (e.g., reusable serveware, waste sorting). ✅ Suggestive Checklists: For organizers not yet ready to commit fully, provide a list of suggested measures like digital ticketing or local food suppliers. ✅ Lead by Example: Implement these measures in your own events to set the standard! ✅ Offer Incentives: Discounts on park rentals or extra promotion for zero-waste events can motivate organizers. 💡 Success Stories: 🔸 Vrijbroekpark used reusable cups during a cricket competition, reducing single-use waste. 🔸 At the Provincie Antwerpen Festival of the Roses 2023, all catering was required to use reusable packaging. With 2,000+ attendees, only 20 liters of unsorted garbage was produced! 🌹♻️ Why Zero-Waste Measures Matter: ✔️ Less garbage, less cleanup ✔️ Events represent your park’s values ✔️ Opportunity to test new eco-ideas 🔗 Our Handbook with best zero-waste practices from european parks is premiering soon, don't miss the date and follow us on IG and FB https://lnkd.in/dsSEJkUD! #ZeroWasteUrbanParks #EPOS Provincie Antwerpen Zero Waste Lab Asamblea de Cooperación por la Paz (ACPP) Fundacja Ekopotencjał Mooimakers Instituto Superior de Agronomia Parque Natural de los Toruños

Faster, Stronger, Together...the theme of this years GSA Summit couldn't be more relevant at a time when we as the sports industry at large need to embrace all three if we are going to have the impact on climate change we know we can through our actions. It's one thing to sit on the sidelines and throw peanuts but another to step up and take direct action. This story in Fast Company is a good example of throwing peanuts. Yes, Paris 24 is a massive opportunity for the global reuse community - just as is the entire sports ecosystem - but reporting of half truths as is the case in this story doesn't help. Paris 24 and the Coca-Cola Company actually have a very robust re-use plan given the operational constraints they are operating under and I for one knowing more than is shared in this story am impressed with what they are going to achieve. Lets encourage and applaud the likes of Paris 24 and Coca-Cola's and encourage them to go faster, stronger, together rather than throw peanuts from the gallery.
