Nelson Mandela is elected president. Brazil wins the Football World Cup. And the largest European movement for sustainable cities and towns is born - in Aalborg⭐ The year is 1994 and the beginning of The Aalborg Charter - an urban sustainability initiative signed by more than 3,000 local authorities from over 40 countries. The Aalborg Charter was approved by the participants at the first European Conference on Sustainable Cities & Towns in Aalborg, Denmark in 1994. In 2024 the conference returns as we celebrate the 30th Anniversary of the Aalborg Charter. Before, during and after the international conference the city will be filled with green activities and events, including: - The Net Zero Pathways conference and - Aalborg's 8th Sustainability Festival. We have labeled it, Aalborg 2024. The climate challenges are massive and overwhelming. Aalborg 2024 is a new chance for Europe to take action. It’s our cities our responsibility. Looking forward to returning to the American College of Greece in Athens for the 2024 EBEN Conference! I am excited to discuss the challenges in implementing Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), with a particular focus on multi-stakeholder engagement for SDG implementation in a European metropole. Our analysis reveals the pitfalls of viewing businesses as strategic actors solely as key stakeholders of sustainability. One significant shortcoming is the notion that sustainability initiatives can manage stakeholders in the same way businesses do; sustainability, by its nature, cannot manage stakeholders. Additionally, the strategic orientation of potential partners in such multi-interest groups poses a challenge, as they may not necessarily prioritize normative goals over their strategic objectives.

Relocating internationally three times has profoundly shaped my view on sustainability, with each move sparking new insights and deeper commitments. The second move, to Sweden, was pivotal. In Sweden, a society known for its commitment to environmental responsibility, I witnessed firsthand the impact of sustainable practices on a national scale—from eco-friendly urban design to the cultural norm of recycling and green energy. It was a ‘lightbulb moment’ that redefined my understanding of individual responsibility within a collective framework. The third move, to Malta, presented a contrast. Malta, with its unique challenges as a small island nation, underscored the urgency of climate resilience and the need for sustainable resource management. Observing the effects of climate change on such a delicate ecosystem reinforced my commitment to sustainability, both in my professional life and personal choices. Each experience has left a lasting impression, driving me to advocate for sustainable practices in every environment I inhabit. What sparked your 'lightbulb moment' about sustainability? #GreenerTogether #LinkedInNewsEurope

I am honored to share that my article, “Environmental Sustainability in Maritime Hubs: The Case of Santa Pola, Spain”, developed during my assignment as a United Nations Volunteer, has been published. The article has been prepared as part of the report "Towards Circular: Analysis of the Coastal Areas of Greece, Italy and Spain" by Think Tank AlterContacts, an NGO in Special Consultative Status with ECOSOC. The report, launched during the European Sustainable Development Week 2024, highlights key pathways to a circular economy, focusing on sustainable practices in Mediterranean coastal regions.
