Faster, Stronger, Together...the theme of this years GSA Summit couldn't be more relevant at a time when we as the sports industry at large need to embrace all three if we are going to have the impact on climate change we know we can through our actions. It's one thing to sit on the sidelines and throw peanuts but another to step up and take direct action. This story in Fast Company is a good example of throwing peanuts. Yes, Paris 24 is a massive opportunity for the global reuse community - just as is the entire sports ecosystem - but reporting of half truths as is the case in this story doesn't help. Paris 24 and the Coca-Cola Company actually have a very robust re-use plan given the operational constraints they are operating under and I for one knowing more than is shared in this story am impressed with what they are going to achieve. Lets encourage and applaud the likes of Paris 24 and Coca-Cola's and encourage them to go faster, stronger, together rather than throw peanuts from the gallery. #OlympicGamesParis2024footprint #greenwashing #climatechange #survivalmode #shrinkingsnowfall #unpredictableweather #wastefulexpenditure #vanityproject #gigantism #singleuseplastics #CocaCola #exclusivecontract #IOC 'But he added the Olympics was also in “survival mode”, especially for the winter editions that are plagued by shrinking snowfall and unpredictable weather. Research carried out for the IOC said the number of viable hosts could be reduced to just 10 countries globally by 2040. Benja Faecks from non-profit Carbon Market Watch, said the French capital’s plans to cut emissions did not go far enough. “The Games as they are right now don’t make sense in the face of climate change,” she said. For years, there has been criticism about the construction of buildings or facilities for the Games, with IOC research finding 15 per cent of venues built since 1896 were no longer in use. Ross said a big problem the Olympics has faced is “gigantism”, with every host wanting its event to be a “little bigger, more grander”. Paris is not likely to meet its goal of cutting consumption of single-use plastics. An exclusive contract with Coca-Cola to provide beverages has been given a veneer of sustainability with reusable cups and fountains, but will still rely heavily on plastic bottles. Another challenge is the emissions generated by spectators travelling to the event. Spectators at the upcoming games in Los Angeles and Brisbane will be even more reliant on air travel compared with Paris, where some European teams have committed to travel by train. David Gogishvili, a researcher at the University of Lausanne who has studied Olympic emissions, said he did not think it was possible to bring together 12,000 athletes and millions of spectators in “one place and for that to happen in a green way.”'

⚽️🌍 Football and sustainability: Tackling the environmental impact together 🌍⚽️ Football is one of the most popular sports, with a global fan base of 3.5 billion people. However, this beloved game leaves a significant ecological footprint, producing over 30 million tonnes of carbon dioxide annually—equivalent to the total annual emissions of Denmark. The main culprits? Travel by fans and teams, energy consumption in stadiums, and waste generated during events. For instance, the 2022 World Cup in Qatar alone generated 3.63 million tonnes of CO2, primarily from transport and accommodation. But there’s good news: solutions are emerging! 🔄 The environmental impact of fan waste: the carbon emissions from travel contribute to global warming, causing extreme weather events and rising sea levels. Additionally, waste from matches—plastic bottles, food packaging, paper products—often ends up in landfills, taking decades to decompose and polluting soil and water resources. 🌟 Existing solutions for sustainability: several initiatives are underway to reduce football's environmental impact. UEFA has introduced sustainability measures for the 2024 European Championships, promoting rail travel and providing free local transport for ticket holders. Both the Premier League and UEFA have joined the UN's 'Race to Zero' campaign, aiming to halve emissions by 2030 and achieve net-zero emissions by 2040. Innovative waste management solutions like smart waste bins are also being implemented to help recycle waste effectively. 🙌 What Can Fans Do? As fans, we can contribute to sustainability efforts. Here are some tips: ✔️ Optimize transport: choose public transport, cycling, or walking. Participate in supporters' buses or community trips to reduce private car use. ✔️ Recycle and manage waste: use designated waste bins and choose eco-friendly alternatives to plastic products. ✔️ Sustainable consumption: opt for food and drinks with minimal packaging and support local, sustainable sources. ✔️ Support community initiatives: join environmentally conscious supporters' groups or initiatives to reduce football’s environmental footprint. Together, these small steps can make a big difference in reducing the environmental impact of football and other sports. The more of us who commit to a sustainable future, the more likely we are to influence positive change in our favorite sports! Let’s tackle this challenge together for a greener, more sustainable future! 🌍💚 More info on our blog (HUN): https://lnkd.in/gm8sc2hQ #Sustainability #EcoFriendly #Football #GreenLiving #CYCLE #UEAFA #netzero #CYCLE #CYCLEHungary

Australia is gearing up to host some major international sporting events in the coming years, including the Commonwealth Games, Rugby World Cups, and the exciting Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games. These events are not just about athletes and medals but also involve a massive behind-the-scenes effort in supply chain logistics and sustainability. At the recent Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games, held a year later due to the pandemic, there were incredible sustainability initiatives in place. From using recycled consumer electronics for medals to powering the Games with renewable energy, the focus was on reducing environmental impact and promoting sustainability. With thousands of athletes, officials, and support staff from around the world, the Games required sourcing over a million items ranging from sports equipment to food, all while keeping a keen eye on sustainability. The goal was not just to host a successful event but to leave a positive legacy for the future. Supply chains for major events like the Olympics are complex, involving everything from raw material extraction to last-mile distribution and waste management. By increasing transparency and focusing on sustainability, we can manage risks and create new opportunities for a greener future. https://lnkd.in/gbv5nkME #Olympics #SupplyChainSustainability #GreenEvents #FutureofLogistics

Both the Paris Olympics and the recent Euro Football Championship in Germany provided the attending public with reusable cups and containers. It's now an inevitable sign of the times that event organisers are switching to reusables rather than wasteful single-use plastics. It's also a case that both those major events were held in countries that have recently introduced packaging laws that support reusable uptake. Properly arranged, reuse systems at events are an obvious next step. They reduce resource use, greenhouse emissions and waste, as long as those cups and containers are collected, washed and reused, multiple times. Whist we still have to wait to find out what the cup return rate at the Paris Olympics was, a start has been made. What we certainly didn't need was to find out that Coke, an official Games sponsor, were in the habit of decanting drinks from single use plastic bottles into reusable cups to sell! The main point is that major events should now consider providing reusable cups and containers as a standard practice. Reusable cups and containers are available, what is needed are the systems to collect and reuse to be put in place. There is no point in having reusables, if they are not getting collected and returned. The good news is that these collection and return systems exist and are now just waiting to be utilised. In Australia a growing number of stadiums and major festivals and event organisers are taking the step to reuse, and we welcome this. However, change is slow. What we really need is government to set some new rules and make reuse cups and containers standard practice at all sporting stadiums and at all major events. The Commonwealth Government is about to release a consultation paper on a product stewardship for packaging scheme and every other jurisdiction has a plastic reduction plan. This is their opportunity to set those rules, and there is no time to waste.
