We were delighted to share our strategies for sustainability at La Cañada Flintridge Country Club with Golf Business Magazine, the always useful magazine of the National Golf Course Owners Association. We hope it helps other clubs and courses go down the green pathway (the name of our sustainability initiative). In my opinion, as more green spaces are gobbled up by development, golf courses will play an ever more important role in the health and welfare of communities. If golf wants to survive into the future – where resources and ecosystems are stretched thin and challenged like never before – it has to bring a positive benefit to the world. That positive usefulness can be beautiful, protected green spaces, and all the desirable, life-enhancing treasures, such as water filtering, cooling of the air with trees, habitat for at-risk wildlife, and more. Most of that bounty is shared by those around the green space, and not necessarily only those playing golf through it. Those natural gifts need to be stewarded, lovingly attended, and supported as part of a new understanding of golf’s role in a changing world. I believe the case needs to be made that golf courses are life-enhancing green spaces; the alternative is likely a paved-over, short-sighted strip mall or development. Once a green space is developed, it’s not likely to ever return. Read the article for tips to get started.

#GreenFridaySpotlights 🌿 🌳 Integrating Geotagging Technology in Golf Course Sustainability 🌳 At Greenstand, we're excited to see our Treetracker app being used to drive sustainable practices in golf courses around the world! 🌍 Mimosa Plus Golf Club in the Philippines has successfully geotagged over 1,200 trees using our Treetracker app, providing invaluable insights into tree distribution and environmental impact. This digital approach replaces traditional methods, streamlining the process and making sustainability practices more accessible and effective. Golf courses like Mimosa Plus and Bukit Course at The Singapore Island Country Club are leading the way in environmental stewardship, aligning their efforts with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDGs). These initiatives not only enhance the natural beauty and biodiversity of the courses but also promote mental well-being for golfers and contribute to carbon sequestration. We're proud to support such innovative and impactful projects. Interesting article discussing the golf industry's efforts towards sustainability, highlighting various initiatives undertaken by golf courses and organisations. Something I'm learning about quickly in this new role (does nearly 5 months still count as new?) is the importance of environmental stewardship and how golf can serve as a model for other industries in terms of sustainability practices. It's important golf collectively highlights the positive impact that the industry is making towards sustainability, and its potential to inspire. There's much to celebrate.

Dear Friends, This is dedicated to my great Friend & Fellow Swimmer in our Kanata Surfers Masters Swim Club, Mr. Jim Birtch. Jim and I have been close friends for more than 13 years. We've been together through happy moments, but also through tough moments in our lives. Jim has been my inspiration and motivation for a long time. You can find his amazing book on Amazon. Highly recommended! Jim Birtch A Culture of Sustainability: The Long Journey Home https://lnkd.in/eDjwjvUH https://lnkd.in/eFZzWADN This book will help the general reader understand sustainability and the role of culture in making our world sustainable. At the beginning, it distinguishes between sustainable development, which focuses on growth to meet human needs, and sustainability, which also seeks balance with nature. It provides a simple explanation of the environment, including clear descriptions of the biosphere, biomes, and ecosystems. It explains culture and its growth through human interactions with the environment, with reference to hunter-gatherer, agricultural, and city cultures. It explores how technology grew with social expectations, and how the Earth came to be considered a warehouse of resources for human use. It points out three elements – technical solutions, changes to the built environment, and changes in behaviour – that created the technological revolution, but which can also be used to achieve sustainability. The book describes a culture of sustainability, its historical roots, how it is growing, and how we can help it grow more quickly. This is done with reference to the current sustainability crisis. The growth of environmental awareness is traced from the conservation movement to the current sustainability movement. This leads to a discussion of international action for sustainable development, explaining and commenting on endeavours such as the Club of Rome, MAB, the Brundtland Commission, ICLEI, the 1992 UN Conference on Environment and Development, Agenda 21, and Agenda 2030. The UN Global Goals (also called the UN Sustainable Development Goals) are discussed in terms of benefits and what could make them easier to implement. An argument is made for strengthening bottom-up leadership for sustainability. This is followed by two chapters on approaches that do this – Biosphere Reserves and Biosphere Eco-Cities. Then three future scenarios are described based on top-down leadership, addingbottom-up leadership, and then adding Indigenous elements. The reader is left with the task of developing ideas for personal actions on sustainability to create a better future. 317 words 2133 characters with spaces

The vast majority of the 39,000 golf facilities around the world don’t have a sustainability manager or director. They don’t have the capacity to take challenges and opportunities and mold them into their business to come out as a more efficient, more popular, more profitable business 👎 🎙️ In this conversation, Jonathan Smith shares how the GEO Foundation for Sustainable Golf strives to help everyone meet their sustainability goals. https://lnkd.in/eCpXsRWw #Golfsustainability #ForSustainableGolf #Sustainability #GreenGolf #OpenGolf
