We just read and analyzed word-for-word the entire Q3 Cox Automotive Dealer Sentiment so you don't have to. Here are the insights and the implications moving forward. 2024 Dealer Sentiment Index continues to paint a picture of unease among U.S. automobile dealers. The overall market sentiment index has dropped to 40, down from 42 in Q2 and 45 a year ago. This decline highlights a persistent perception of a weakened market. Jonathan Smoke, Chief Economist at Cox Automotive, points out, "For more than two years now, after reaching peak profits in 2021, U.S. automobile dealers have viewed the overall market as weak." The combination of economic uncertainty, upcoming national elections, and shifting market dynamics is placing significant pressure on dealerships across the country. Franchised dealers are maintaining some optimism, with a one-point increase in sentiment from Q2, reaching a score of 50 in Q3. However, this positivity contrasts sharply with the struggles of independent dealers, whose sentiment dropped to 37. This marks the second-lowest score in history, only surpassing the global economic shutdown of Q2 2020. Independent dealers are particularly pessimistic about nearly every aspect of the market, dragging down the overall scores. All Dealers are looking ahead with increasing caution, indicating most U.S. auto dealers expect a further market weakening. Record-High Costs and Profitability Challenges: The cost index hit a new record of 77, signaling that rising operational costs are severely impacting profitability. This strain on profits is casting a shadow over dealers' overall market outlook and sentiment. Inventory Levels Stable, But Price Pressure and Sales Challenges Persist New-vehicle sales sentiment dropped to 51, down from 59 in Q3 2023. The combined used-vehicle sales index was 43, indicating widespread concerns over sales performance. Additionally, price pressure is intensifying, suggesting dealerships feel increased pressure to lower prices. After inventory shortages eased in 2022, price pressure has returned to pre-pandemic levels. Conclusion: Compton Automotive Advisors, recognize the challenges that dealers face in this uncertain environment —market conditions are difficult, and profitability concerns are paramount.
