What if on Day One with no experience at all you knew exactly what you needed to do to get to the top position? How empowering would that be? I was in Seattle recently and saw this poster outside the Washington State Ferry Building advertising career paths for different positions. This is for a Chief Engineer—a position I held as a young Lieutenant in the Navy.  A person can start as a wiper with no experience and after hitting a few intermediary milestones, 1800 days of sea time, and a Coast Guard exam late--that person can be the Chief Engineer! Complaints about worker attitudes, motivation, and ability to self-start are issues I hear commonly. Yet, how do we really motivate employees? ❓Do we really expect employees’ current position to be the role they will want to fill for the next 20 years? ❓Do we not recognize that our employees might have aspirations beyond entry or mid-level work? ❓How do we help them get there? How clear is that path? Is it laid out, clear as day in black and white? If not: Why not? ❓Why do we let talent and experience walk out the door? ❓How strong would your organization be if your top leadership was grown from within and people were actually working hard to get to the top? #careerpath #sandiegobusiness #ceoleadership #workermotivation #vistage

As I'm turning a new corner on new decade, it was certainly a nice present 🎁 to hear from Chip Conley at the San Diego Vistage Executive Summit this week on "what gets better with age." In case you don't know, Chip was the adult in the room to the founders of AirBnb. To start off, he shared his idea of middle age is 35 to 75, so Bam💥! right out of the box, I'm getting another 15 years! Chip is definitely in my ➕ column. The thrust of his thesis is that we all have access to an incredible amount of knowledge in a "small brick in our pocket." The challenge moving forward is what do we do with that knowledge? He argues that wisdom is gained from "painful life lessons." Enter mature people. We have painful life lessons in droves. Our perspectives--our wisdom--is incredibly valuable with discerning priorities and making decisions. When building your teams, especially your senior leadership teams, how do you bring in wisdom to help shape your decision making process? What is your wisdom management practice? For you and for your people? What I love about Vistage Worldwide, Inc. is that we regularly take a time out to ponder big picture issues such as this. About last weekend.... I gathered with my community of practitioners, academics, newly minted master's graduates, and enthusiasts in the field of Organization Development and adjacent fields, like Human Resource and I/O Psych. 😎 Lessons I'm so glad to have learned that helped spark the conversations on Saturday: 1️⃣ Ask for what you want. So today I'm celebrating helping 100+ women heal, balance their hormones, and release weight in the last year Quitting my 12 year corporate career in digital commerce where I 5xed the business in 3 years launched my side hustle in health coaching for high performing women, specialising in hormone balance for women with high stress, big demands on their time, big deliverables showed them what I learned, how I became the person who can look and feel good The same blueprint that helped me become the person who could get promoted, hit my commercial targets, hire and grow a digital team from scratch, and launch a business on the side I want to help a generation of women heal. This is a big task. I have to tell you. One of the biggest changes I made in my life and business was hiring a coach. I was at Entrepreneurs'​ Organization #seattle Entrepreneurs' Organization - Seattle for #alchemy. I hear Mark Moses, CEO Coaching International and Rich Balot share about the power of business, coaching and their journeys! It was absolutely awesome! Over the next 3-4 months I read the book #making #big #happen. Then I decided my company rock would be to hire a #coach. I always thought…. I’ve been in #business 20 years. I don’t need a coach. I am a coach. It’s a waste of time and money. I was wrong. So I take the plunge and hire CEO Coaching International and my coach is John Giegerich. I said I have to have a coach that has the same #christian beliefs that I do. And I got connected with John. It was #magic. From my first interaction with John it’s been a game changer. We shutdown a business line. Started doing one on ones with leaders, evaluated core values, set real quarterly goals that connected our entire team, introduced eat the frog, prioritized the urgent and important, (it’s like #EOS on steroids) etc. etc. The truth is, the cost is no joke. But the cost pushes to seek the very best of yourself, the very best from your time, and the very best for your coach. See it is crazy what a connection I have to my coach. It’s emotional and personal and business. Why? There is stuff in business you can’t tell or share with anyone. Other business owners sometimes get jealous or play games, or have big ego’s. But with John he’s helping me with the tough stuff you don’t share with anyone. You tell your spouse she just worries, it’s not good, you try to share with your family and friends, they just don’t get it, but your coach has been there and grown and scaled a business. He knows. Then you have a coach who is actually pulling for you. He’s connecting people to my #podcast, introducing other clients that maybe good business fits, like this guy and team are totally invested in my true success. (At least that’s how I feel). John has 20 clients, but I feel like his only one. Okay okay, enough. But let me tell you. The cool thing about CEO Coaching International. Is they are checking up on John, and my experience. I got a call from a customer success manager who really does care and asked me tons of questions about my experience and was really invested in making it the best experience possible for me, which is awesome. Not only my coach cares, the company cares. Finally, I broken my ankle last year, I’m a big guy 300+lbs. I’m a hockey player, a boxer, a fighter. I love to fight. But this ankle knocked me down. And I’ve been struggling to get my physical life in order. John got me to run the Marine Corps marathon. This is probably been one of the best things for me and my entire life. I needed motivation. I needed something to help me push through the daily excruciating pain. I needed a coach who cares. #makebighappen. Todays Run! 🏃

“People feel burned out when they aren’t aligning their work with their highest purpose.”  Thoughts on this topic?   I agree with this quote and the power of drive but think it’s an oversimplification. Drive can push us and unlock our discretionary effort, but there will still come a point where downshifting is inevitable. When that point comes, we need to ensure we have the tools to regain our energy and continue strong performance.
