Helpful reminder from Pew Research Center that we should check the data before we assume we know which terms people prefer. This is especially helpful to share at the top of Hispanic Heritage Month. "Latinx" isn't the most accepted term, according to their report. Awareness doesn't equal acceptance. "Hispanic" and "Latino" continue to be the most accepted terms, but preferences differ based on age, education, background, and more. My tips? 1. Research the top terms and use them appropriately. 2. Insightful opinion piece by Ana Valdez for The Latino Newsletter about two interconnected truths that resonates especially if you have worked in advertising and marketing to the Latinx/e community: 1️⃣ U.S. Latinos come from diverse backgrounds that inform their worldviews and voting decisions. What resonates with conservative Mexican Americans in Texas, Cubans, and Venezuelans may not resonate with the Mexican American community in the West. 2️⃣ Latinos are Americans. We care about many of the same issues as other Americans, but we are unique as our backgrounds are also multicultural. We are 200%: 100% Americans and 100% Latinos. I will add a third line which is country of origin matters coupled with generational points of view formed by lived experiences and individual classism. It's shocking how many PR pros overlook this: Translating press materials and media pitches into languages other than English in diverse markets. For instance, your chances of securing press coverage in Spanish-language newspapers and TV in Miami—where 72% of the population is Hispanic—are significantly higher if you correspond with journalists and provide them with everything in Spanish. Pro tip: Consider the Spanish-speaking audience when filming your b-roll video interviews too. P.S. My Spanish skills are far from fluent.
