Connect and Elevate Women in Tech Roundtable In a recent roundtable session at Optus, women from various stages of their careers came together to share their experiences in the industry. The session was hosted by our senior leader Emma Hartwell with Carly Beauchamp, Lingzhi Zhou, Madi Sinclair, Elizabeth Canham, Stephanie B., Briannah Milne, Deeksha Jagadeesan, Annie Te - these are leaders, fellow colleagues, and fresh graduates, creating a diverse and enriching conversation. Here are my takeaways: 💪 Building Confidence and Creating Safe Spaces The conversation highlighted the importance of creating safe spaces where women can uplift each other. By sharing experiences and offering support, women can build confidence and feel more empowered to voice their opinions. ✌ Integrating Personal and Professional Life The concept of work-life integration, as opposed to work-life balance. The participants discussed how integrating small personal activities into their professional lives can bring joy and a sense of accomplishment. Maybe scheduling a yoga session on a Friday morning or setting up a quick laundry cycle. These small pockets of personal time can help maintain a healthy and fulfilling lifestyle. 👋 Fostering Inclusivity and Transparency The conversation also underscored the importance of transparency at different levels. By openly discussing challenges and solutions, we can foster a more inclusive environment where everyone feels valued and heard. For interns and graduates at the start of their careers, as it helps them navigate the industry with confidence and support. 🤝 The Power of Allies Finally, the session emphasized the importance of creating allies. Allies can provide crucial support in challenging situations, helping women navigate their careers with greater ease and confidence. Building a network of supportive colleagues can make a significant difference in overcoming obstacles and achieving professional success. This week I have joined a panel discussion on Women in Tech organised by Le Wagon, where Amanda Perino mediated a conversation with three amazing speakers: Stefana Sopco, Gabriella Trentin and Lala Rustamli. Hearing their experiences and advice was inspiring and enlightening and I would like to share some key takeaways: 👩💼 Navigating Challenges: It is clear that in tech, stereotypes can be a hurdle. However, every experience is different and we should try our best to understand each other. 💁♀️ Feedback and Expectations: Feedback for women can be less constructive due to lower expectations. Women often feel the need to prove themselves, leading to potential burnout. 💬 Communication and Visibility: For women, speaking up is crucial. Waiting to be noticed isn't always effective. The goal is to battle your uncertainties, find the confidence to voice your ideas and proactively seek recognition and opportunities. 🤝 Mentorship and Support Networks: Mentors play a vital role in helping overcome barriers and navigate careers. Finding support networks is very beneficial for getting over the imposter syndrome. 🌐 Inclusion in Action: Representation of women in technical roles of all levels is very important for inspiring others and fostering inclusivity. 💃 Strengths and Contributions: Women bring unique strengths like emotional intelligence, organisational skills, and active listening. Notes on organizational issues for Perspektywy Women in Tech Summit 2024. In this post, there is little fun, more practical advice. 🔸 Queues for registration - photo attached. The end of my line is hidden behind the last yellow tents. And in addition, two more queues are added to it from other entrances to the Summit territory. Therefore, it’s worth arriving either early enough or simply not booking activities in the early morning) Everything is organized at the highest level, but there are a lot of participants and queues will often be present. 🔹 Workshops and mentors get booked very quickly. It is advisable to make your choice before opening their reservations. However, not all participants come to the workshops and if you join the live queue in advance, you have a great chance to join. Mentors can also be free and a live queue works here as well. 🔸 It’s only worth arriving for the speakers' presentations in advance if you want to take a seat. You can listen to them all while standing without any problems. 🔹 There are events before and after the official dates. You can also get to the afterparty if you know the right people 😎 🔸 Summit application. It is very convenient to plan activities, add people as friends, navigate the “map” of the event, apply for vacancies, and much more. 🔹 It’s worth analyzing the agenda and choosing your activities in advance. But don't fill all the time slots. Set your priorities. Leave yourself time for unexpected communication with new people, participation in quizzes from various companies, and don’t forget to have lunch 🍜 ☕ 🔸 And most importantly - your team. To my regret, none of my friends could join me on these two days and I went to the event alone 🥲 On the first day, I was not very successful in establishing constant communication with someone. ✨ Honored and Inspired at #ITWASIA2024 – Women in Tech ✨ It was an absolute privilege to co-moderate a thought-provoking roundtable discussion, alongside an incredible group of women in tech. 💻💡 Our conversation spanned a range of topics crucial not just for women in tech but for everyone striving to thrive in today’s dynamic workplace. Here are some key takeaways: 🔗 Collaboration: The Engine of Innovation Building strong connections within teams fosters effective collaboration. Speak up and make your presence known in meetings. Thank you, Nimisha Tailor for sharing your experience managing an introverted team while working with an extroverted leader! 🌟 Networking: Stepping Outside Comfort Zones Networking—both within and outside the organization—is critical for building partnerships and winning opportunities. Women, in particular, must find creative ways to network throughout different stages of their careers. 🎭 Skills Development: Storytelling and Beyond Storytelling is an essential skill today. Thank you, Donna Lorenzen, for shedding light on its importance. As Kyle Hegarty, LeadershipNomad wisely noted, “Hard skills get you the job, but soft skills get you promoted.” Invest in both to build a well-rounded skill set. Thank you Kyle for giving a different perspective to the discussion. 🧘 Mental Well-being: A Shared Priority Mental well-being was a heartfelt topic for many of us. Organizations should prioritize mental health and actively support employees. We discussed how having mentors or sponsors—within or outside your firm—can enhance not only professional growth but also mental health.
