Having recently installed my own children at their respective universities, it was great fun to briefly experience the other side of the coin and give a lecture today to media studies students at NYU London! Their influence is greater today than ever before, yet the discipline is not widely understood, and many dismiss its power by dismissing it as advertising and promotion.   In an Introduction to Public Relations, students will be guided through the early C20th origins of the subject in the US by its self-proclaimed progenitor, Edward Bernays, who built his business and reputation using emerging psychoanalytic techniques established in Europe by his uncle, Sigmund Freud.   In this class, you will: - Explore the rise of Public Relations through case studies, tracing its development from the Cold War era of the 1950s into the swinging '60s. - Examine how politicians and governments increasingly used PR to shape public opinion and influence policies on major events like the Gulf War and the recent COVID pandemic. - Follow the rapid growth of unelected corporate influence in government, particularly through lobbying, which is a subset of Public Relations.     📅 Course Start Date: Winter 2025 Offered in English only. The 2023 CPRE report highlights practitioners wanting graduates to be able to read and use data -- not necessarily be data scientists per se.

Call to all PR university educators to participate to a research project! Title of the research project: Theoretical Orientation of Higher Education Institutions Educators and Public Relations Pedagogy in Europe. We would like to invite you to take part in a research study. The purpose of the study is to understand how different Public Relations paradigms inform the teaching practice of PR lecturers. We invite all PR educators in Europe to take this survey; the study is open to both PR academics and PR practitioners teaching on PR degrees. We will publish the results of the study in a PR or communications-related journal. We will also communicate the findings via a webinar organised by European Public Relations Education and Research Association. We begin with Europe and hopefully we will be then able to expand its range and reach.
